Trump slammed for saying he's 'pretty busy' to buy Melania a birthday gift: 'Spends every weekend golfing'

Trump claimed he hadn’t bought Melania a birthday gift due to being busy with tariffs, though the White House had not announced any deals

WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump appears to have more important things on his plate than celebrating his wife Melania’s birthday, like bragging about his tariffs.

On Friday, April 25, the US President, 78, was asked a simple question: "Are you taking Melania to dinner or have you had time to get her a present?"

Donald Trump says he didn't have much time to buy presents for Melania

“I’ll take her to dinner on the Boeing, I’ll take her for dinner on Air Force One,” Donald Trump quipped to reporters, before adding, “I haven’t had much time to buy presents. I’ve been pretty busy. But it’s working out. People are starting to understand how good tariffs are, for us.”

Melania’s birthday is on Saturday, and critics wasted zero time dragging Trump on social media for his tone-deaf answer.

"Says the guy that spends every weekend golfing," one posted on X.

"Yeah her birthday is okay, but have you heard about my great tariffs?" another quipped.

"Wrong Answer… this is where you say 'of course… we’re planning a nice celebration. She’s the love of my life.' You don’t say 'uhh how bout those tariffs,'" a comment read.

"Her birthday wasn’t explicitly stipulated in the agreement and therefore falls under 'discretionary,'" someone else joked.

"This tells you everything you need to know about him," another chimed in.

Donald Trump's tariff claims

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has been boasting that he’s already crushed it on the trade front — telling Time magazine this week that he had made “200 deals” with other countries to slash tariffs.

However, there's no reported evidence of his claims. Neither Trump nor the White House could cough up the name of a single country or show any receipts, according to the Independent.

Still, Trump insisted: “You have to understand, I’m dealing with all the companies, very friendly countries. We’re meeting with China. We’re doing fine with everybody. But ultimately, I’ve made all the deals.. The deal is a deal that I choose.”

But China has denied they’re in tariff talks with the Trump camp. Chinese officials have reportedly told the US to approach them with a little more respect.

And while Trump’s busy patting himself on the back, Americans might not be buying what he’s selling. According to a Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll published this week, just 34 percent of Americans support his tariff strategy.

Donald Trump sells 2028 hats as he hints at potential presidential run

It's worth noting that Donald Trump is now selling Trump 2028 hats on his website. At the National Prayer Breakfast in February, the commander-in-chief offered some hints about a potential run as he bragged about how he wanted to attend the event in person instead of dialing in.

"They told me I could [attend] via Skype. I said, 'I’ve been there every year. I’m not doing it via Skype. Instead, I’m going to be there. It’s not that far,'" he said, adding, "You know, it’s like about two minutes down the road. In fact, it was easier to do this than put up a Skype deal — destroy the White House, putting up all that stuff."

"But no, I want to be here with you. And I have been here with you," he continued. "And I do that despite the fact that they say I can’t run again ... Then somebody said, 'I don’t think you can.'"

Having said that, he’s got at least one diehard supporter in his corner. Republican Rep Andy Ogles from Tennessee proposed amending the US Constitution back in January, just so Trump could potentially serve a third term.

Ogles argued that Trump has “proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”

He also said it’s “imperative” to give Trump “every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.”
