WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump might want to brush up on his football history - because his latest gaffe had even fans shaking their heads.

On Wednesday, the president gathered a room full of female athletes and activists at the White House to sign an executive order banning transgender athletes from competing in women's sports. However, the moment came with an eyebrow-raising blunder.

Trump's football fumble while signing executive order

While addressing the crowd, the 78-year-old went off-script to praise Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville. The Alabama senator — a former college football coach — had played a key role in pushing a Senate bill called “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports”—something Trump was more than happy to celebrate.

And then came the fumble. "Tommy Tuberville, a great coach. You know, his quarterback was named Mahomes," Trump declared confidently.

"He was a great college coach, and I said, 'How good was he?' He said, 'You don't want to know how good. He made me into a great coach.' He's a pretty good quarterback, right? Yeah, he was very good. And he's a good guy too," he added.

There was just one tiny problem with that statement - Tuberville never coached Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes and Tuberville never crossed paths

Now, let’s set the record straight. Tuberville did coach at Texas Tech, but he left in 2012 after just two seasons. Mahomes didn’t even arrive at Texas Tech until 2014. That means Mahomes’ actual coach was Kliff Kingsbury, not Tuberville.

According to Newsweek, Tuberville left Texas Tech before Mahomes was even on the program’s radar. After leaving Lubbock, Tuberville took a job at the University of Cincinnati in 2012, where he coached for four years before retiring in 2016.

It's worth noting that Tuberville once claimed he had recruited Mahomes to Texas Tech. However, this was also debunked. According to the Cover 3 College Football Podcast, Texas Tech was actually focused on recruiting another quarterback, DJ Gillen.

It wasn’t until Gillen de-committed — a month after Tuberville had already packed his bags for Cincinnati — that the Red Raiders turned their attention to Mahomes.

Fast forward a few years, and Mahomes made history with the Kansas City Chiefs by getting drafted No 10 overall in 2017 and becoming one of the biggest stars the NFL has ever seen. Meanwhile, Tuberville pivoted to politics and rode Trump’s MAGA wave all the way to the US Senate in 2020.

Social media roasts Trump’s slip-up

As expected, critics on social media wasted zero time dragging Trump for his Texas Tech mix-up.

"Patrick Mahomes college coach at Texas Tech was Kliff Kingsbury. Feel free to fact-check that and Felon Trump's dementia is showing," one person posted on X.

"Yep, and Vince Lombardi did a whale of a job with Michael Jordan," another quipped.

"Cites a conversation that factually didn't happen. Unless Tubs really lied to Trump about coaching Mahomes. These people have no bottom so I guess it wouldn't shock me too much," a third critic chimed in.

"That’s the man in charge," read a comment.

"He should be asked about every stupid and embarrassing thing he says at press conferences, pointing out his lies," someone else insisted.

"Time to retire grandpa!" another snarked.

Trump set to attend Super Bowl LIX

It is safe to assume that Trump isn’t letting the blunder slow him down. He’s set to attend Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans this Sunday, February 9, where Mahomes and the Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in a highly anticipated rematch of Super Bowl LVII.

If the Chiefs pull off a victory, it will mark an unprecedented Super Bowl three-peat - a feat no team has ever achieved.

Also, Trump will reportedly become the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl, as a special guest of New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson.
