DETROIT, MICHIGAN: Michigan's GOP Chair Pete Hoekstra revealed that former President Donald Trump has urged the state's Republican leaders to target Black voters in Detroit and other regions in the state with a predominantly African-American population, as per Associated Press.

"The president believes that there's a case to be made for reaching out to African American voters and Hispanic voters, whether it's in Saginaw or going into Wayne County or Muskegon, anywhere across the state," noted Hoekstra on Monday, March 25. A larger part of the metro Detroit is in the Wayne County.

Republican leaders of the Great Lakes State traveled to Florida, the base of Trump's campaign, to discuss the GOP presumptive nominee's strategy to win the state during the November election.

Michigan is considered a swing state in the 2024 presidential election after Biden flipped it blue in 2020.

President Joe Biden turns unpopular among Black voters

According to an AP-NORC poll conducted in February, only 58% of Black adults expressed approval of the incumbent's performance in the office. This indicates a stark plummet from 94% in January 2021. Having said that, only 24% favored Trump.

Biden has also been under fire from the minority population who are unhappy with his stance on the Israel-Hamas war and a Graza ceasefire.

Though at present, the US has changed its stance toward Israel, at the time of the Democratic primary in Michigan in February, many voiced their opposition by voting "uncommitted," which caused a dent in his vote share.

This shift among Black and minority voters, especially in metro Detroit, apparently caught Trump's eye.

Donald Trump to focus on southeast Michigan

Michigan GOP Chair Hoekstra said their discussion focused on southeast Michigan to target "nontraditional Republican voters and traditional Democrat voters."

He added, "This meeting was about let's talk about southeast Michigan and creating relationships, and then make sure that we continue this dialogue over the next seven and a half months."

Hoekstra further revealed that the ex-president's 2024 campaign is "very interested in Wayne," which is the largest base of Democrats.

The county voted almost 70% for Biden in the 2020 election.

Responding to Trump's newfound interest in Michigan, the Biden campaign said that the state's voters "remember Trump's racist record, and they're not going to fall for his desperate pandering."

Internet reacts to Donald Trump directing his focus on the Black voters of Detroit

Weighing in on Trump's focus on Michigan's black voters, some netizens interestingly drew a comparison with the ex-president's recent golden sneaker line. Previously, Fox News host Raymond Arroyo had claimed that Black people would support Trump because "they love sneakers."

One labeled Trump's move "The Sneaker Strategy," while another quipped, "Hahaha by selling them shoes."

"Trump thinks passing out beer, Newports, and ribs in Detroit will get Black folks on his side," joked a person and someone else remarked, "Yeah, Trump cares deeply about black people, give me a break."

An individual expressed, "They have to figure out where Detroit is first. They are delusional." One more opined, "Republicans always try this and fail miserably. You would hope that one day they'd just learn the lesson but that day isn't today apparently."

Another person simply stated, "Not gonna happen."
