Trump uses mail-in voting despite repeatedly attacking the system as a ‘scam’
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump, despite repeatedly saying that mail-in ballots cause election fraud, has once again used the convenient voting system to cast his ballot in Florida elections.
Trump has persistently branded the system as “mail-in cheating” and a “scam,” urging the US Supreme Court to suspend the counting of mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day.
Trump casts mail-in ballot despite calling the process ‘scam’
President Trump wants millions of Americans to stop preferring the mail-In ballot to exercise their voting right when away from their home polling station. But he requested a mail-in ballot last month to participate in Florida’s Republican primary elections.
Records in Palm Beach County, where the president’s primary Mar-a-Lago residence is located, show that Trump exercised his mail-in ballot, and his ballot arrived on August 14, according to Politico, which first reported the story.
Trump has exercised mail-in voting to participate in a special election in March. But his latest use of the technical and convenient system comes after his administration’s emergency request to the Supreme Court to implement sweeping restrictions on Americans’ access to mail-in ballots.
WH clarifies why Trump used mail-in ballots as he calls it ‘cheating’
As the Supreme Court has repeatedly pushed back against the administration’s plea, the president pushes Congress to enact his far-reaching election reform legislation.
“As President Trump has said, the SAVE America Act has commonsense exceptions for Americans to use mail-in ballots for illness, disability, military, or travel – but universal mail-in voting should not be allowed because it’s highly susceptible to fraud,” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales said in a statement shared with The Independent.
“As everyone knows, the President is a resident of Palm Beach and participates in Florida elections, but he obviously primarily lives at the White House in Washington, DC,” she said. “This is a non-story.”
Days after casting his ballot by mail in March, Trump described the process as “cheating” during an event in Tennessee.
“Mail-in voting means mail-in cheating. I call it mail-in cheating, and we got to do something about it all,” he said at the time.
Court blocks Trump administration from making voters register
Last week, the Trump administration pressed the Supreme Court for permission to implement new rules that could significantly restrict voters’ access to ballots in midterm elections this fall.
Federal courts have blocked the US Postal Service from further implementing Trump’s executive order that sought to create a national voter registration list that would be used to decide who is eligible to cast a ballot.
