Trump’s approval rating falls in 20 states he won in 2024 as voters reject his ‘second-term agenda'
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump is now seeing negative approval ratings in 20 states he won in the 2024 election.
In almost every state except 11, more people disapprove of Trump than approve of him, according to new polling from YouGov. Overall, 310 days into his second term, Trump holds a net approval rating of –19%. According to the poll, 38% of Americans approve of his performance, 57% disapprove, and 4% remain unsure.
Recent poll reveals Trump’s lowest approval rating yet
The District of Columbia recorded the lowest approval rating for President Trump at –77.0 points. Maryland followed with –41.5 points, and Hawaii ranked third with –35.6 points.
Pollsters also found that Trump’s approval rating has dropped in every state except Idaho since January. Oklahoma saw the biggest change, with his rating falling from +27 points to –7.
Calvin Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University, told Newsweek, "President Trump’s aggressive second-term agenda has depended upon complacent Republican majorities in Congress."
However, he said both Trump and GOP lawmakers now recognize that public opinion has turned against them on key economic issues. According to Jillson, "Now both the president and his congressional majorities are intensely aware that polling has shifted against them on the all-important economic issues and the coalition that carried them to victory in 2024, including unusually strong support among young people and minorities, has crumbled."
Jillson added, "Republicans know that Trump sees the red lights flashing, but there is little confidence that he can shift his attention from pursuit of the Nobel Peace Prize to the electorally critical issues [of] jobs and affordability and hold it there. Democrat confidence is growing.”
Economic anxiety and trade war talk drive Trump’s polling slide
At the start of Trump’s second term, Americans were almost evenly split on whether they approved of his presidency. But that balance has shifted, and his approval has fallen as more people express frustration with how he is handling inflation and the economy.
Trump won re-election by tapping into economic worries, promising voters that incomes would rise, inflation would disappear, jobs would surge, and the middle class would thrive during his second term.
So far, many Americans feel let down. His ratings for handling the economy and inflation were positive right after he took office again, but they have since turned sharply negative following his talk of a trade war and the market’s uneasy reaction. YouGov’s data also shows that Americans now disapprove of his handling of immigration, another key issue in his campaign.
Trump warns about ‘fake polls’
President Trump: So many Fake Polls are being shown by the Radical Left Media, all slanted heavily toward Democrats and Far Left Wingers. A new Fox News poll found that 76 percent of voters view the US economy negatively, a higher number than at the end of Joe Biden’s term, when 70 percent said the same. Trump pushed back on the polls earlier this month on Truth Social, calling them “fake.”
He said, "So many Fake Polls are being shown by the Radical Left Media, all slanted heavily toward Democrats and Far Left Wingers…Fake News will never change, they are evil and corrupt but, as I look around my beautiful surroundings, I say to myself, 'Oh, look, I’m sitting in the Oval Office!'"
