"It was quite an experience," Caprio shared, describing the standing ovation he received from loved ones and hospital staff.
“I went from getting pancreatic cancer and not many people having any hope that I live — to successfully completing five doses of radiation,” he says.
“Ringing that bell to me was more symbolic than anything else you could imagine,” he tells PEOPLE. “I'm ringing the bell of happiness. I'm ringing the bell of freedom of cancer. I'm ringing the bell of healing. I'm ringing the bell of giving hope to other people.”

“It was a very emotional experience,” he adds.
Caprio was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2023, a diagnosis that came with a bleak prognosis. Despite this, he remained steadfast in his determination to beat the disease, undergoing six months of chemotherapy followed by five doses of radiation.
"The treatment was a very trying experience," Caprio admitted. "But you can't give up hope. You have to dig deep within your courage and make up your mind that you're going to beat this." He credits his successful recovery to excellent medical care and a resilient spirit.
Pancreatic cancer, which accounts for about 3% of all cancers in the United States, is notoriously difficult to detect early. Symptoms often don't appear until the cancer is in an advanced stage, making Caprio's triumph all the more remarkable.
With his treatment behind him, Caprio is back in Los Angeles to attend the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards, where he is nominated for Daytime Personality - Daily. This marks a significant comeback for Caprio, who missed last year's event due to his cancer treatments.
"Last time, I didn't attend because I was going through chemotherapy. I thought that I would never be able to travel again," Caprio said.
"But here I am in Los Angeles. So the nomination just makes me feel very proud. And I don't care what anyone says to you, if you're nominated, you're hoping that you win."
Despite the challenges, Caprio remains optimistic and grateful. "I just feel honored and I feel great. It's just something that was beyond belief last year."
