WASHINGTON, DC: House Republicans' allegations that President Joe Biden was involved in his son's business transactions were refuted by Hunter Biden and his legal team on Wednesday, February 28, during a much-anticipated, lengthy closed-door deposition on Capitol Hill.

Hunter Biden's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said following the deposition that House Republicans centered part of their interrogation on his client's history with addiction, which the first family has publicly addressed, per NBC News.

"It seems to me that the Republican members wanted to spend more time talking about my client's addiction than they could ask any question that had anything to do with what they call their impeachment inquiry," Lowell said.

Reporters were informed by Lowell that Hunter Biden's almost six hours of testimony yielded no evidence to back up the charges made by Republicans.

What else came out of the closed-door deposition involving Hunter Biden?

The House Oversight Committee and the House Judiciary Committee, both of which are currently under GOP control and are leading an impeachment inquiry into the sitting President, conducted a deposition that was marked by occasional “heated” exchanges and interruptions during questioning.

Sources familiar with the proceedings noted that some "kerfuffles" arose between Democratic and Republican members concerning the aforementioned interruptions.

Hunter Biden said in his prepared opening statement, "I am here today to provide the Committees with the one uncontestable fact that should end the false premise of this inquiry: I did not involve my father in my business. Not while I was a practicing lawyer, not in my investments or transactions domestic or international, not as a board member, and not as an artist. Never."

The First Son also lambasted the Republican-led investigation in his opening remarks, calling it a "baseless and destructive political charade" that was founded on "MAGA-motivated conspiracies."

"For more than a year, your committees have hunted me in your partisan political pursuit of my dad," he continued. "You have trafficked in innuendo, distortion, and sensationalism — all the while ignoring the clear and convincing evidence staring you in the face. You do not have evidence to support the baseless and MAGA-motivated conspiracies about my father because there isn’t any," he added.

During the GOP-led investigation, James Biden, the President's brother, stated before the lawmakers that his brother was not involved in his business dealings throughout his fifty-year-long career.

Hunter Biden has gone on to highlight the issue, as he appeared a week after his uncle, James.

Despite the testimony of almost every witness before the committees, no evidence has been found that suggests the President was involved in his family's business dealings.

Additionally, the witnesses have been unable to provide any evidence that the President's occasional casual interactions with Hunter Biden's business partners included discussions surrounding it.

What did House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer say?

In early November last year, Republicans issued a subpoena to Hunter Biden.

However, despite the repeated requests, he refused to comply with it for several months.

He stated that he would only testify at a public hearing due to his lack of trust in Republicans in a private setting.

After months of investigation, no evidence of wrongdoing by the sitting POTUS has been presented by House Republicans.

Both the White House and Democrats have refuted GOP lawmakers' claims about the President, repeatedly asserting that they are false.

The impeachment effort centers around misinformation that originated from former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov.

Smirnov was recently indicted and accused of providing the bureau with false information about Joe and Hunter Biden during the 2020 presidential campaign.

Hunter Biden mentioned Smirnov during his opening statement, where he informed GOP lawmakers that Smirnov had " made you dupes in carrying out a Russian disinformation campaign waged against my father."

Despite these developments, Republicans have not been deterred by the charges against Smirnov and are continuing with their impeachment inquiry, although Democrats have argued that the central point of contention is based on falsehoods.

Biden and a few of his business colleagues made "contradictory statements that I think need further review," according to House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) who said following the deposition.

The interview "proved several bits of our evidence," Comer claimed thereafter, adding that a public hearing will be the next stage of the impeachment investigation.

"I think that the public hearing hopefully will clear up some discrepancies between some of the statements that were made between some of the associates and what we heard today, but all in all, I’m very optimistic, very excited about this deposition," said Comer, who is spearheading the investigation with Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith, (R-Mo.), and Chair of the Judiciary Committee Jim Jordan, (R-Ohio).

Transcripts of the deposition will be made available, Comer continued, "as soon as both sides agree to that," which he anticipates happening within the next two to three days.
