WASHINGTON, DC: On January 6, 2021, the US Capitol was breached by supporters of then-president Donald Trump in an apparent attempt to overturn the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. As the mob surged through the halls, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) was escorted out of the building when she referred to Trump as "a domestic enemy."

Pelosi's daughter, documentary filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, captured these comments on camera and they were part of footage recently released to Congress by HBO. The video provides a raw and unfiltered look at Pelosi’s reaction in the immediate aftermath of the Capitol assault.

The video reviewed by NBC News captures over 30 minutes of footage from the chaotic 48 hours surrounding the Capitol attack. In one segment, Pelosi is seen being escorted away from the building by her security detail and she urges her staff to ensure that the National Guard would be deployed to protect the Capitol.

Her comments in this footage went further than her public statements made on January 7, when she accused Trump of having “incited an armed insurrection against America” and leading an attack that would “forever stain our nation’s history.”

In the previously unaired clip, Pelosi is seen seated under a shattered mirror when she says, “We take an oath to protect our country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. There is a domestic enemy in the White House. And let's not mince words about this."

The footage also shows Pelosi taking responsibility for not pushing law enforcement officials harder in their preparations for the day. She wondered why the National Guard wasn’t preemptively stationed at the Capitol.

“Why weren't the National Guard there to begin with?” she asked. “They clearly didn't know, and I take responsibility for not having them just prepared for more… It's stupid that we should be in a situation like this.”

Pelosi was also skeptical of the law enforcement community’s motivations.

"They thought these people would act civilized? They thought these people gave a damn? What is it that is missing here in terms of anticipation?" she asked. Her skepticism was further underscored by reports that a high-ranking FBI official was warned after the attack that some within the bureau were “sympathetic” to the rioters.

"Shame on us… I'm suspicious of them and their motivations, tell you the truth," she lamented.

Despite concerns about law enforcement failures, the House committee investigating the events of January 6 ultimately focused on Trump's role in the attack.

The newly released footage also includes a clip of Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) making a quip about Trump pardoning the rioters — a stance that Trump, now the Republican presidential nominee once again, has continued to endorse by referring to the January 6 defendants as "hostages" and "unbelievable patriots."

The day after the attack, Pelosi was relieved that Trump’s presidency was nearing its end. In the video, when asked by her daughter how she felt about being "done" with Trump after Congress certified his election loss, Pelosi responded by saying there should be consequences for his actions.

"I just feel sick about what he did to the Capitol and the country today," she said. "He’s got to pay a price for that."

Nancy Pelosi faced backlash on social media after she called Donald Trump a 'domestic enemy' in a resurfaced 2021 video clip

Nancy Pelosi, however, faced quite a backlash on social media for calling Donald Trump a "domestic enemy" in the resurfaced clip.

"Nancy is on record saying it was her fault, but okay," one social media user wrote on X.

"You are the enemy," another shared.

"Nancy was part of the plan! Notice when she left! Report on the exact time she left the room where they were doing the official Congressional business! She refused Trump’s offer of Nat Guard to help secure the Capitol," one person alleged.

"Great that her daughter happened to be there that day to film the whole thing. It looks more like a well-planned set-up," someone else chimed in.

"... And it's rhetoric like this that led to a delusional 20-year-old to take shots at Trump and shoot him in the head, and kill a bystander. And dems talk about how they abhor political violence," read one comment.

"And, she committed a coup within her own party when she kicked Biden off the ticket. But, ret---ed liberals will look past that," another individual wrote.
