WASHINGTON, DC: In response to former President Donald Trump's false claims during the first presidential debate, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi offered a correction, referencing the moment she famously tore up a copy of Trump's State of the Union speech, per Comic Sands.

During Thursday’s presidential debate, the 78-year-old MAGA strongman erroneously asserted that then-House Speaker Pelosi had hindered efforts to address the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol by falsely claiming to have “offered 10,000 National Guard troops, and they turned it down.”

It is important to note that Pelosi didn’t hold the authority at the time to command the National Guard, as it is typically activated and commanded by the governors of their respective states or territories.

What did Nancy Pelosi say in retaliation to Trump's lies onstage at the debate related to the events of Jan 6?

Nancy Pelosi swiftly addressed the former president's false claims with a statement on X, formerly Twitter, where she referenced tearing up Trump's 2020 State of the Union address.

"I tore up the former president’s State of the Union address because it was a manifesto of lies. Tonight he presented another pack of lies which along, with his candidacy, must be rejected. How dare he place the blame for January 6th on anyone but himself, the inciter of an insurrection?" the 84-year-old ex-California representative wrote.

Recalling 2020, then-Speaker Pelosi tore up President Donald Trump's speech after the State of the Union address. This act garnered international attention and inspired numerous online memes.

During the 2020 SOTU address, then-President Trump employed provocative and inflammatory language, particularly his claim that the nation was in the grips of "American carnage."

Speaker Pelosi extended her hand to President Trump as he approached the podium. President Trump declined the gesture, turning away without acknowledging it.

Seated behind the president's podium in the House chamber alongside then-Vice President Mike Pence, Speaker Pelosi simply smiled and sat down.

After the 78-minute address by the US President, Pelosi dramatically tore up the paper copy of his speech. She later told reporters, "It was the polite thing to do, considering the alternative."
