PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: Former President Donald Trump commended a Supreme Court ruling on Friday, June 28, that could limit the application of a law which prohibits obstructing an official proceeding.

This law is currently being used to prosecute individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riot.

Per MeidasTouch, this change might potentially result in some individuals having their sentences overturned for their actions on that day, which some MAGA Republicans refer to as "patriot day".

What did Donald Trump say regarding the Supreme Court decision?

On Truth Social, former President Trump described the development as "Big News!" and shared a summary of the ruling from Julie Kelly, a self-proclaimed "J6 conspiracy theorist" and "insurrection denier".

Kelly asserted that the Department of Justice has "unlawfully prosecuted 350+" individuals for their actions on January 6.

The 78-year-old MAGA strongman also reposted a quote implying that the SCOTUS ruling could affect his own federal case related to the events of January 6.

Additionally, the 2024 presumptive Republican presidential nominee shared his ever-ardent attorney Jonathan Turley's claim that "for Trump, this rips the wings off the plane that Jack Smith has been trying to take off in D.C".

The ex-commander-in-chief has consistently indicated his intention to pardon individuals involved in the January 6 riots and voiced criticism against the Capitol Police for the attack during Thursday’s presidential debate.

Despite the complexities of Trump's case, his ongoing association with the events of January 6, including hosting fundraisers for affected families and engaging in collaborations with inmates, suggests a continued involvement in this controversial issue.

This situation raises further questions about Trump's commitment to upholding democratic principles.

Internet reacts as Donald Trump praises SCOTUS ruling

Trump drew backlash on social media for praising a Supreme Court decision that would narrow the scope of a law barring obstructing an official proceeding.

One X user remarked, "All should go to prison."

Another user said, "It does not mean that. However it does mean that the SCOTUS is as corrupt as trump himself. Dark days these, for Americans."

Another user claimed, "Only means “one of their many charges each” may be dropped. They’ll still spent most of their sentence in prison yet."

One user argued, "This is not the flex MAGA culters think it is. This ruling only affects 4-5% of those sentenced, and 100% of those 4-5% were charged with more than one crime. It's really a nothing-burger. A handful will get a few months knocked off their sentence, that's all."

Another X user wrote, "In reality SCOTUS sent the ruling back to the lower courts."

Finally, this user tweeted, "A defeat for America. Overturning lawful elections is now protected. Honestly, we deserve losing our democracy at this point."
