WASHINGTON, DC: Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a new indictment against former president Donald Trump for allegedly trying to overturn the results of the 2020 general election on Tuesday, August 27.

According to Deadline, the new filing revised the previous charges to narrow their scope since the US Supreme Court ruling provided immunity to presidents for official acts.

Changes in new indictment filing against Donald Trump

The indictment has been amended to remove government officials, including those belonging to the Department of Justice, reported Fox News. It highlights Trump's role as a candidate and clarifies the allegations over his conversations with then-vice president Mike Pence.

A section of the previous indictment that accused Trump of trying to utilize the Justice Department to overturn the election results was removed from the new indictment.

The charges that remain include conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

“The superseding indictment, which was presented to a new grand jury that had not previously heard evidence in this case, reflects the Government’s efforts to respect and implement the Supreme Court’s holdings and remand instructions in Trump v. United States,” read the court filing against Trump.

“In furtherance of these conspiracies, the defendant tried — but failed — to enlist the Vice President, who was also the Defendant’s running mate and, by virtue of the Constitution, the President of the Senate who plays a ceremonial role in the January 6 certification proceeding,” it stated.

Donald Trump calls new indictment 'dead witch hunt'

Donald Trump took to Truth Social to post a long rant in response to the new filings in the 2020 election interference case.

He wrote, "In an effort to resurrect a 'dead' Witch Hunt in Washington, D.C., in an act of desperation, and in order to save face, the illegally appointed 'Special Counsel' Deranged Jack Smith, has brought a ridiculous new Indictment against me, which has all the problems of the old Indictment, and should be dismissed IMMEDIATELY."

"His Florida Document Hoax Case has been completely dismissed. This is merely an attempt to INTERFERE WITH THE ELECTION, and distract the American People from the catastrophes Kamala Harris has inflicted on our Nation, like the Border Invasion, Migrant Crime, Rampant Inflation, the threat of World War III, and more."

"For them to do this immediately after our Supreme Court Victory on Immunity and more, is shocking. I've also been informed by my attorneys, that you're not even allowed to bring cases literally right before an Election – A direct assault on Democracy! This is an unprecedented abuse of the Criminal Justice System," he continued, repeating his claim that the Democrats cheated in the 2020 election and are using lawfare to fight him in the run-up to November.

Conservatives slam Jack Smith online

MAGA supporters took to X (formerly Twitter) to defend Donald Trump and shredded into the special counsel for a filing new indictment. They accused him of interference in the 2024 election cycle using the indictment.

"Jack Smith is the one committing election interference," alleged one MAGA supporter.

"Thanks Jack for helping Trump right before election :)," said another.

"Another bump in the polls incoming. These political hack jobs never learn. Playtime is over," commented one individual.

"It’s just ridiculous at this point," wrote another.

"Jack Smith is a complete hack. He needs to be fired and tried and put in federal prison," one person stated.

"Oh brother, here we go again," added another.
