STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA: The world learned with shock that retired NASCAR racer Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina Grossu Biffle, and their two children died in a plane crash on Thursday, December 18.

In total, seven people lost their lives when the small jet went down near Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina. New details have come out about Cristina’s final message before the crash. Her last known words were: “We are in trouble.”

Officials confirmed that the business jet, a Cessna C550, took off from the airport but soon faced problems. It crashed while trying to return to land, according to authorities.

Cristina Biffle’s final text to her mother before plane crash

Cristina sent a text to her mother, Cathy Grossu, just before the horrific accident, saying, “We are in trouble,” PEOPLE reported.

Cathy, overcome with grief, recalled, "She texted me from the plane and she said, 'We're in trouble.' And that was it. So we're devastated. We're brokenhearted."

She added that the family was traveling for a birthday trip to Florida, sharing, “To think that they would be killed on a birthday trip, that was just such a fun time for the family. And to see the horrific way that it ended, it's just, it is so hard to bear. I cannot believe they're gone.”

Investigation and tributes following the Biffle family plane crash

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) launched investigations into the plane crash that killed Greg, his wife Cristina, and their two children. While the cause of the crash was initially unknown, authorities have now confirmed the findings.

Even before the accident, Greg had been sharing his usual holiday cheer through his "Biffmas" daily giveaway. Last week, he even posted a vlog on his YouTube channel, giving fans a peek into a recent trip with Cristina to Indianapolis.

Following the tragic news, NASCAR expressed sorrow. “Greg was more than a champion driver; he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many,” NASCAR said. “His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the sport.”

Cristina’s mother also opened up about her heartbreak. “I don't remember what the last words that I said to my daughter or to Greg or to my precious Ryder. I don't remember. I know we hugged, but I don't remember those last words and that's going to haunt me. But they were happy,” she shared.
