MIAMI, FLORIDA: Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani stirred controversy after suggesting that the recent earthquake in the New York City tri-state area was a message to "communist states."

Giuliani's remarks, made during his 'America's Mayor Live' show on Friday, April 5, have sparked widespread criticism and accusations of conspiracy theorizing.

The rare 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck at 10.23 am ET near Whitehouse Station in New Jersey, close to the Trump-owned National Golf Club in Bedminster. Despite its intensity, there were no major reports of damage in the city, according to New York officials.

Giuliani's speculation

During his show, Giuliani remarked, "We were in the communist state of New York and then we were in Connecticut and we just escaped all the earthquakes. Then we got to Massachusetts, which probably had some earthquakes, and we got to New Hampshire where there were no earthquakes, which is telling me that somebody's sending us a message."

He continued, "The communist states are getting earthquakes. Look at California. You can't have more earthquakes than California. You want to figure out why?"

Giuliani later addressed potential backlash, stating, "Now they're going to say I'm a conspiracy theorist, I'm crazy. You know why? Because they don't have a sense of humor. They're not even human anymore. They're Marxist automatons."

The remarks raised eyebrows on social media platforms, with a clip of Giuliani's statement garnering significant attention. Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of the left-wing MeidasTouch Network, shared the clip, which received over 900,000 views.

Giuliani wasn't the only prominent figure to suggest divine intervention in the earthquake. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also implied a spiritual significance, stating, "God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent. Earthquakes and eclipses and many more things to come. I pray that our country listens."

According to Newsweek, US Geological Survey (USGS) seismologist Paul Earle explained that the earthquake and the upcoming solar eclipse were unrelated events. "This is unrelated to the solar eclipse. Earthquakes of this size have no correlation with celestial bodies," he said.

The USGS website further refutes any connection between space weather and earthquakes.

"It has never been demonstrated that there is a causal relationship between space weather and earthquakes. Indeed, over the course of the Sun's 11-year variable cycle, the occurrence of flares and magnetic storms waxes and wanes, but earthquakes occur without any such 11-year variability. Since earthquakes are driven by processes in the Earth's interior, they would occur even if solar flares and magnetic storms were to somehow cease occurring," the website reads.

Internet ridicules Giuliani's remarks

That said, social media was abuzz with reactions following Giuliani's comments. Some criticized him for invoking religion and spreading unfounded theories, while others lamented Giuliani's fall from grace as "America's Mayor."

"God is also sending a message by bankrupting and disbarring him," one posted on X.

"What about the hurricanes in Florida and Texas?" another wondered.

"So many, like Rudy, have sold their souls to own the libs at all costs. It’s so bizarre. There’s no turning back for them," a comment read.

"This, once 'America's Mayor.' Really very sad," someone else lamented.

"What a fool Rudy Giuliani is to invoke religion as the cause of New Jersey’s earthquake. Tornadoes and floods ripped through red states. What was God’s message in that? Rudy is broke morally and financially. God obviously is punishing him, right Rudy?" another chimed in.
