LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: After losing unanimously by decision to Leon Edwards at UFC 296 on Saturday night, December 16, welterweight fighter Colby Covington made the outrageous claim that the judges scored against him because they hate his support for former President Donald Trump.

Trump was cageside for the fight to support Covington, who has closely tied himself to the former president, according to Daily Mail.

Colby Covington blames judges' anti-Trump bias for loss against Leon Edwards

While the crowd roared when Trump entered, they turned on Covington when he offered little action during the lackluster five-round fight. In the post-fight press conference, Covington initially said, “I could sit here all day making excuses, I should have zigged when I zagged and so on but that's not the cloth I'm cut from.”

Moments later, however, he offered a huge excuse, claiming that the judges hate him for backing Trump.

“I thought I’d done enough, I thought the third, fourth and fifth were mine easily,” Covington said. “But the judges never favor me, they hate me because I support Trump and everybody hates Trump in this building so it is what it is, life goes on.”

Colby Covington's offensive remarks against Leon Edwards

During fight promotion, Covington enraged Edwards by saying he would see Edwards’ late father in hell. Edwards’ father was murdered when Leon was just 13 years old. Showing no remorse, Covington doubled down the next day, accusing Edwards Sr of being “a sex trafficker, drug lord and killer.”

When asked if this was just part of his controversial public persona to hype fights, Covington refused to back down. “I'm not a character, I say whatever I want, whenever I want, that's what bosses do,” he said defiantly.

“Why would I care what you guys think about me? All my haters in the world are not doing better than me. I'm selling PPVs, getting the most famous person on planet earth to support me,” he further added.

Colby Covington mocked on social media for refusal to acknowledge defeat

Following his defeat and subsequent explanations, Covington faced severe backlash online. Social media users swiftly condemned his refusal to acknowledge defeat graciously, drawing parallels between his behavior and the perceived attributes of his political idol, Trump.

Reactions flooded in, reflecting disdain for Covington's lack of accountability. One user's scathing remark on X read, "What a loser he is. Just like his idol." Another commenter directly linked Covington's behavior to Trump's influence, stating, "Trump has taught everyone of his followers to not take responsibility for shyt."

Amidst the uproar, a third user sarcastically highlighted the apparent selective nature of blame, stating, "It’s always rigged but only when they lose." Another individual criticized what they perceived as a wider trend, stating, "Typical MAGA. Can't take any responsibility for their own failures."

The online discourse continued, with a fifth user bluntly likening Covington's actions to a familiar tactic, stating, "Blame someone else very Trump-like."
