JoJo Siwa reflects on post-coming out challenges in Demi Lovato’s 'Child Star' documentary
JoJo Siwa has been openly discussing her sexuality since coming out as queer in 2021. In Demi Lovato’s upcoming Hulu documentary 'Child Star', JoJo shares her experiences following her public announcement.
According to Hollywood Reporter, JoJo recounted a conversation with Nickelodeon’s president after she came out.
The president reportedly asked, “What are we going to tell the kids?” to which JoJo, then 17, replied, “That I’m happy?”
The president allegedly instructed her to assure retailers that she wasn’t “going crazy,” leading JoJo to contact major stores like Target, Claire’s, and Walmart.
Despite following these directives, JoJo’s relationship with Nickelodeon deteriorated, and she revealed, “I basically got blackballed from the company.”
JoJo, now 21, mentioned that she is much more concerned about others' opinions today and believes she would have reacted differently to similar circumstances now.
"If the president of my music label called me now and was like, 'Yo, what the fuck?' like the president of my network did then, I would lose my mind," she said.
"Honestly, I’d be like, 'Oh my God, I’m so sorry. Yes, I’ll go back in the closet. Or I’ll delete it. I’ll say it was a prank. I’ll get a boyfriend.' But back then, I was like, 'I’m in love, and I’m happy. Shut up.'"
