'Wicked' star Cynthia Erivo shocks fans with her 'rude' reaction to interviewer
During Cynthia Erivo's recent appearance at the 'Wicked' premiere in New York City with co-star Ariana Grande, Ajay Porter of the Mystery Fashionist asked the two to rate their outfits on a ten-point scale and reveal which designers they were wearing.
"Rate your outfits from one to ten and let me know what you guys are wearing," Porter said.
The actresses gave each other a perfect score of 10 for appearance. Ervio said that her sheer black dress was from Dior while Grande revealed that her pink gown—which was a reference to her role as Glinda—was a Louis Vuitton creation.
"Y’all look amazing," Porter said, moving on to a different subject and asking, "What is a common misconception about y’all?"
Grande gasped at the question and turned to her co-star who sternly replied, "I don't know what the common misconception is at all, but that's not a fashion question, is it?"
Erivo's response generated conflicting responses on the internet, with some admirers calling the actress "rude" and others applauding her honesty.
"Girl! That was unnecessary!" One person wrote, while another commented, "That Cynthia lady seems so rude."
Erivo reposted the interview clip to her own Instagram page, suggesting that she found humor in the entire situation.
The Mystery Fashionist always starts his interviews with a set of questions about fashion before asking them to share a common self-perception.
Interviews with celebrities like Paris Hilton, Ben Stiller, and Adam Sandler can be found on his Instagram page.
Cynthia Ervio previously called fan-made 'Wicked' poster 'deeply hurtful'
Cynthia Erivo, 37, made headlines in October when she denounced a fan-edited "deeply hurtful" poster from 'Wicked' which was shared on TikTok, saying it had "erased" her after her eyes were obscured and costar Grande was left unaltered.
Erivo criticized the artwork in a harsh social media post at the time, saying: "This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen, equal to that AI of [me and Ariana] fighting, equal to people posing the question ‘is your ***** skin green.’"
She went on to draw a comparison between it and the inquiries she received about her green skin in the movie. "None of this is funny. None of it is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us," she blasted, per Daily Mail.
The original poster of the 2003 Broadway musical shows Glinda whispering into Elphaba's ear, who has green skin, red lips, and her witch hat covering her eyes. In the poster for the latest film adaptation of the musical, both of the actor’s faces can be seen and the color of Erivo's lips is changed to green.
However, one fan edited the new poster to resemble the original, changing the color of Ervio's lips to red and covering her eyes completely. while minimally altering Grande's image.
"The original poster is an ILLUSTRATION. I am a real life human being, who chose to look right down the barrel of the camera to you, the viewer …because, without words we communicate with our eyes," Ervio said.
"Our poster is an homage not an imitation," she said, adding, "To edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that is just deeply hurtful.."
Cynthia Ervio's 'piercing' response to interviewer leaves fans offended
Many internet users were offended by the Tony winner's response to the interviewer, criticizing her for seemingly taking offense at such a basic question.
"She was unnecessarily piercing, he asks about misconceptions during interviews often," one commenter wrote on the video the outlet shared on their Instagram handle.
Another commented, "Cynthia can be kinder. He's just nervous"
A user wrote, "Left was rude," in reference to Erivo.
One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, "I understand it wasn’t a fashion question but it’s not like he was asking a rude question …"
Another said in part, "Why does he only have to ask fashion questions? And actually, Cynthia, it’s possible for there to be a misconception about one’s fashion choices/favorites, etc."

Why does he only have to ask fashion questions? And actually, Cynthia, it’s possible for there to be a misconception about one’s fashion choices/favourites, etc. And he changed gears that fast cause a publicist told him he had 30 seconds total to interview them. pic.twitter.com/MrGnfb1SyX
