Worst dressed celebs at Emmys: Alex Borstein and Aubrey Plaza among stars who missed memo for red carpet
2024 Primetime Emmy Awards worst dressed stars
Following the postponement of the Critics Choice Awards due to strikes by writers and actors in 2023, the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Monday, January 15, per Daily Mail. Though the strikes by writers and actors have now ended, it appears that some stylists may have abandoned their clients, based on the terrible red carpet displays. Several famous guests suffered significant fashion blunders, landing themselves a spot on the worst-dressed list for the evening.
Alex Borstein
Comedian Alex Borstein may have made people laugh a lot with her flamenco dancer-inspired horrific attire. The highly provocative outfit included a see-through lace bra and miniskirt worn beneath a flashy red silk robe adorned with black-and-red floral decorations that hung over each shoulder. Although the audience approved of this smoldering red and black outfit, Borstein's unusually elaborate details immediately made her appear on the list of worst-dressed stars.
Aubrey Plaza
Modern and stylish haute couture is the hallmark of the Spanish fashion house Loewe. However, they seemed to have been sadly pressed for time and could only finish half of Aubrey Plaza's gown before delivering it. The 'White Lotus' actor's full-length acid-yellow satin dress seemed to have been completed only at the bottom by the Louis Vuitton subsidiary. They seemed to have forgotten to even cut the pattern for the upper half. Rather, they simply made a square out of the fabric and used a large pin to secure it. However, viewers did not feel comfortable with her ivory-colored clothing.
Suki Waterhouse
'Daisy Jones & the Six' star Suki Waterhouse wore a vivid red ball gown from Valentino's haute couture Spring/Summer 2023 collection for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. It included a plunging waist, a full skirt, a big bow at the middle of her waist, and a backless design that exposed her baby belly. She accessorized her outfit with Tiffany & Co pieces, however, she failed to make the cut with her disaster outfit.
Ali Wong
The always chic Ali Wong had a rare fashion disaster in her terrible attire, which had a striking blend of sequins and flowery print that gave it the appearance of a failed do-it-yourself craft effort. The 'Beef' actor wore a stunning flowery sequin skirt from Louis Vuitton. Regretfully, it was fastened to an exquisite but mismatched bodice. As a result, the outfit had the appearance of a dress pieced together at random. Ali deserved better than this weird mismatch, and could have done without the skirt as well.
Emma Brooks
Influencer Emma Brooks created the impression that she was walking the red carpet completely nude owing to her Grecian-inspired optical illusion outfit. The model, blogger, and TikTok star skipped through the inconvenience of going through a rigorous workout regimen like other celebrities do to fit into their skimpy red carpet-outfits. McCallister chose to "fake it 'til you make it" instead. The aspiring businesswoman completed her look by encircling her waist with a see-through sheet.
Issa Rae
Taking a cue from 'Big Bird,' Issa Rae embraced the unintentional cosplay theme by dressing in a yellow feathered outfit with a high neck, long sleeves, and a floor-length hemline. The entire look was covered in pale yellow feathers. The 'Barbie,' 'American Fiction,' and 'Black Lady Sketch Show' actress is a busy woman having a stellar career year. This flamboyant feather creation was joyful, glossy, and unpretentious - the kind that makes you want to fling your arms wide and spin around.
Anthony Carrigan
Anthony Carrigan was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, sadly he didn't the make cut and nor did his attire for the night. The coat screams a mix between a Jersey cow's patches and a dalmatian's spots. We think Cruella de Vil may want to add this to her wardrobe. The 'Barry' actor misses the mark with this one.
Ellen Pompeo
Ellen Pompeo wore a dress with a bedazzling sheer top, revealing a little bit of her 'Grey's Anatomy' demeanor. A sleek, black satin skirt countered the opulent Monique Lhuillier ensemble. Ellen posed for photos with a silver bra underneath her sparkly, revealing outfit which included a collared long black skirt. The Massachusetts native has been somewhat quiet after leaving her popular medical drama series, in which she appeared for almost 20 years.
Tyler James Williams
'Abbott Elementary' star Tyler James Williams donned a black leather suit at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. The 'Everybody Hates Chris' star stood out from the crowd on the red carpet because of his stylish leather outfit, but unfortunately for the wrong reasons. Sweat breaks occur when leather is used because it generates heat and friction. Williams, however, took precautions to lessen the possibility of sweating issues by ditching his shirt altogether.
Natasha Lyonne
Natasha Lyonne got inspiration for her Emmys ensemble from her daughter, Doe, and her favorite Disney film. Nominated for her role in 'Poker Face' as Charlie Cale, Lyonne was dressed in a floor-skimming Schiaparelli number with silver mesh. The crafty comic spray-painted a few oyster shells silver and placed them on her chest to prevent blushing from the semi-transparent long-sleeved dress. However, viewers were not enamored with Lyonne's droopy dress design. Perhaps it was the dress's too-long length or the odd, silver-threaded frills along her chest.
Quinta Brunson
Quinta Brunson attended the 75th annual Emmys wearing a sleeveless satin dress inspired by the 1950s. With its mid-calf length full skirt and belted, tightened waist, the brilliant fushia-colored Dior Haute Couture scoop neck dress on the 'Abbott Elementary' star was too cute to ignore. Unfortunately, she had to wear a crumpled dress because it seemed like her iron broke before she left.
Brunson won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series as the first Black woman to win the category in 42 years and the second overall after Isabel Sanford.
Donald Glover
Nominated as a writer for 'Swarm,' Donald Glover wore velvet trousers and a shirt embellished with flowers designed by Bode. Bode provided the 'Atlanta' alum, who is known for his amazing sense of style, with a soft black suit that was enhanced with delicate metallic embroidery and ballet flats. However, Glover failed to capture the attention for the right reason owing to his flowery outfit at the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday night.
