WASHINGTON, DC: A tense Senate hearing spiraled into chaos on Tuesday, May 19, after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy repeatedly clashed with Sen Patty Murray during a heated exchange over gas prices, political attacks, and a controversial road trip tied to companies he regulates.

Murray, a Democrat from Washington, openly lost patience while questioning Duffy about his “Great American Road Trip,” a vacation reportedly backed by major corporations including Boeing, Toyota, and Shell.

The senator accused Duffy of promoting road trips to Americans while failing to address rising gas prices connected to the ongoing war in Iran.

The confrontation began after Murray questioned Duffy about the amount of money he personally spent on fuel during the highly publicized road trip.

“You are encouraging Americans to spend the summer road tripping,” Murray told Duffy during the hearing. “Let me just ask you, how much did you rack up on gas during your Great American Road Trip?”

Murray’s question centered on criticism surrounding the vacation, which she noted involved companies that fall under Duffy’s regulatory oversight as transportation secretary.

She argued that encouraging Americans to hit the road while fuel prices remain high felt disconnected from what ordinary families are experiencing.

Duffy responded by saying he did not know exactly how much he spent on gas, but used the moment to take a swipe at former President Joe Biden. “I know it wasn't as much as it was under Biden,” Duffy said.

The response immediately frustrated Murray, who appeared stunned by the interruption and the political turn in the conversation.

“Holy cow,” she replied. “Just listen.”

Murray then accused Duffy of focusing more on self-promotion than on addressing the financial pressure Americans are facing.

“You've been recording a promo of yourself and not working to lower the cost,” she told him. “This show is just incredibly out of touch with where Americans are.”

Sean Duffy turns hearing into political showdown

The hearing became even more heated when Murray pointed out that sponsors connected to Duffy’s road trip allegedly received access to private events involving the transportation secretary.

She argued that the situation raised concerns because those same corporations are supposed to be overseen by the Department of Transportation.

But instead of directly responding, Duffy shifted the focus back onto Murray and other lawmakers. Earlier in the hearing, Sen Kirsten Gillibrand had also grilled Duffy, and he used a similar strategy against Murray.

“If someone in the healthcare industry gives you $2 million, what do they get for it?” Duffy asked Murray.

“I do not regulate the healthcare industry,” Murray shot back.

Duffy continued interrupting and repeatedly insisted, “You have jurisdiction, you have jurisdiction,” while Murray attempted to regain control of the exchange. As tensions escalated, Duffy leaned fully into political rhetoric.

“Welcome to MAGA,” he said as Murray shouted, “Mr Secretary!”

Duffy followed that line with another slogan-driven response tied to energy policy. “Welcome to ‘Drill, baby, drill,’” he added. “Do you want to support lower gas prices? I welcome that. Let's drill.”

By the end of the exchange, Murray appeared visibly exasperated as Duffy continued talking over her and launching political attacks instead of directly addressing the hearing’s questions.

“Mr Secretary, you obviously came here with a book about every one of us, so that instead of answering our questions, you can attack,” Murray said while Duffy continued speaking about pipelines and domestic drilling.

“You are wasting my time,” she added.

The explosive hearing exchange quickly became one of the most talked-about political confrontations of the day, with Murray accusing Duffy of avoiding accountability while turning a Senate hearing into a partisan fight.
