NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: In the midst of the second week of Donald Trump's first criminal trial, which commenced on April 22, supporters of the former president have voiced apprehensions regarding a perceived connection between President Joe Biden and a prosecutor involved in the case.

The trial revolves around allegations that Trump falsified business documents in relation to a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential campaign.

According to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, the payment to Daniels was purportedly aimed at silencing her claims of an affair with Trump. However, Trump vehemently denies any such affair and has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges against him.

The 45th POTUS has additionally accused Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg of pursuing the case for political motives, likening it to interference in elections.

Concerns over prosecutor's background

The concerns raised by Trump's supporters center on Matthew Colangelo, one of the prosecutors presenting the case. Colangelo's past tenure at the Department of Justice (DOJ) during Biden's administration has sparked outrage among Trump loyalists.

Records show that Colangelo served in a senior role within the DOJ, overseeing various divisions including Antitrust, Civil Rights, and Tax, before joining the Manhattan DA's office, Newsweek reported.

Despite there being no evidence to substantiate claims of Biden's involvement in the prosecution, several prominent figures within the Republican party and conservative media have seized upon Colangelo's background to suggest a nefarious connection.

GOP Senator Marsha Blackburn posted on X, "Why would Trump prosecutor Matthew Colangelo leave the #3 spot in Biden’s DOJ for a lower-level job in DA Bragg’s office? This is a coordinated Biden Trial to take down his top political opponent."

Former Trump DOJ official Jeff Clark wrote, "Oh good grief! Matthew Colangelo, the former number three Biden DOJ official, is the one who delivered the opening statement for Alvin Bragg today against President Trump. You can't make this stuff up!"

"BREAKING: Fmr Garland official Matthew Colangelo is now delivering the opening argument in the Trump prosecution. This is a direct signal that the case against Trump comes straight from the Biden Admin, in the middle of an election year," conservative commentator Jack Posobiec added.

"The former #3 official in the entire Biden DOJ left that job to fulfill his dream of being a line prosecutor in a local DA's office. To get Trump. But this is totally independent of the administration," lawyer Will Chamberlain chimed in.

"To anyone foolishly thinking Biden isn't coordinating these Trump indictments His former #3 at the DOJ Matthew Colangelo just gave the opening statement in Trump's NYC criminal trial today. No, I'm not kidding," commentator Rogan O'Handley offered.

Professional history of Colangelo and Bragg

Colangelo's hiring was framed by DA Bragg as a move to bolster the office's capabilities in handling complex cases involving powerful individuals and institutions.

"Matthew Colangelo brings a wealth of economic justice experience combined with complex white-collar investigations, and he has the sound judgment and integrity needed to pursue justice against powerful people and institutions when they abuse their power," Bragg stated in a press release.

Notably, Colangelo's professional history intertwines with Bragg's, as both previously worked together at the New York attorney general's office. During their time there, Colangelo spearheaded investigations into various aspects of the Trump administration, including its charitable foundation and financial practices, per the New York Times.

Colangelo, who also had a years-long tenure at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said he was “honored to reunite with District Attorney Bragg.”

“Expanded enforcement of worker-protection and tenant-protection laws will make our communities safer for all New Yorkers and level the playing field for responsible employers and landlords,” Colangelo said in a statement. “And assisting with the district attorney’s focus on financial crimes will promote confidence in the legal system by making clear that the same rules apply to everyone — no matter how powerful.”
