Zohran Mamdani mocked for awkward 18-second silence and evasive answer at NYC mayoral debate

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Socialist Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani was left red-faced during the October 23 New York City mayoral debate after awkwardly smiling at the camera for 18 seconds before dodging a pointed policy question twice.
The tense exchange unfolded as Mamdani, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, and Republican nominee Curtis Silwa squared off for their second and final debate before Election Day. The candidates clashed over the city’s housing crisis, charter amendments, and broader questions of economic inequality.

Zohran Mamdani pressed over evasive answer on housing policy
The debate heated up when Mamdani, responding to a question on housing, was asked whether he supports the city’s “housing-related charter amendment questions.” Instead of giving a clear answer, he delivered a generalized response.
“I’m appreciative that those measures will be on the ballot, and that New Yorkers will be able to cast their votes for them,” Mamdani said.
“I know that we desperately need to build more housing in this city, and I also know that the jobs we create in the building of that housing should be good jobs as well.”

The moderator, noting the lack of clarity, pressed him again, prompting Sliwa to interrupt with a taunt: “What a political answer! What is your opinion, Zohran?”
As the audience grew louder, Cuomo added, “It’s a yes or no question!”

After a prolonged silence during which Mamdani stared into the camera for 18 seconds, the moderator asked again whether he supported the three amendments. Mamdani finally replied, “I have not yet taken a position on those ballot amendment questions.”
Cuomo quickly jumped in with, “Oh, what a shocker! Once he takes it, he’ll change it anyway.”
Mamdani sidesteps endorsement question amid Kathy Hochul’s backing
This isn’t the first time Mamdani has faced scrutiny for sidestepping. During the October 16 debate, he avoided confirming whether he endorsed New York Gov Kathy Hochul, even after she publicly endorsed him.

Mamdani said the “decision should be made after the election,” drawing criticism from Cuomo, who pressed him on his reluctance. “I appreciate her support,” Mamdani said at the time, dodging again.
Polls show Zohran Mamdani leading ahead of Election Day
With less than two weeks before the November 5 election, recent data suggests Mamdani remains the frontrunner. A Patriot Polling survey found him leading with 43% of voter support, trailed by Cuomo at 32% and Sliwa at 19%.

If elected, Mamdani has pledged to implement sweeping progressive reforms, including raising the minimum wage to $30 an hour, creating government-run grocery stores, and increasing taxes on what he called “richer and whiter neighborhoods.”
Despite his moment of awkward silence, Mamdani’s socialist campaign continues to energize young and working-class voters even as critics question his readiness to lead the city.
