Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral paycheck sparks debate as his supporters think it's 'surprisingly low'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A debate has been brewing on social media over New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's salary.
The 34-year-old democratic socialist was victorious earlier this month after campaigning on a message about yanking power back to the working class. When he’s sworn in next January, he’ll also make history as the city’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest person to hold the job in 100 years.
Mamdani rolled out a wish list of reforms on the campaign trail, including free child care, free buses, and city-run grocery stores. But while Mamdani built his whole campaign around affordability, his own paycheck as the city’s next chief executive is already raising eyebrows.
What Zohran Mamdani will bring home
Once he sits behind the mayoral desk, Zohran Mamdani is set to earn a salary of $258,750 a year. He will also live rent-free at Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official home.
Mamdani’s own financial disclosures put his net worth at roughly $200,000, albeit those filings don’t require listing all assets. For now, he’s living in a rent-stabilized Astoria apartment with a monthly tab of $2,300, which is a far cry from the Upper East Side palace he’s about to call home.
Zohran Mamdani's supporters think NYC's mayor should make more
Zohran Mamdani’s roughly $260,000 salary sparked a wave of reactions, especially from those convinced the amount is not enough for the mayor of America’s biggest, most complicated city.
“Unpopular opinion: the NYC mayor should make more than an entry-level employee in big law/tech. $260k is surprisingly low,” wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user.
"$260k is far below what the mayor of the largest city in the country is worth," another added.
"Personally, I think a guy overseeing a trillion in annual GDP should make more than the VP of a small-cap company," a comment read.
"The Mayor of New York City should be getting paid $5 million a year at least," a supporter insisted.

$260k is far below what the mayor of the largest city in the country is worth. If we paid him the $500k he is worth, but he donated nearly half of it back to the city, would you have anything useful to say then?

Congressional representatives should get $1 million a year and Senators should get $3 million a year.
And then we should have extremely harsh punishments for corruption. https://t.co/xkL9HoLwaR
But not everybody was buying the outrage.
"Hot take: The mayor of NYC should make the median income of the city, which is nowhere as high as $260k," one critic wrote.
"He’s a public servant making $250k while the taxpayer pays his housing and transportation. He’ll be fine," another insisted.
"He will live rent-free in Gracie Mansion. Townhouses in that neighborhood rent for $25,000+ / month. So his total comp is north of $500K/year," a person offered.
"Politicians shouldn’t be in politics for the money. $260k is surprisingly high for a job with no prior working history or requirements," one more remarked.

How Zohran Mamdani's pay fares against other mayors and public servants
It's true that Zohran Mamdani’s incoming paycheck isn’t the top mayoral wage in America. For instance, the mayor of San Francisco hauls in north of $380,000 and the mayor of Los Angeles makes just over $300,000.
Still, Mamdani’s salary leaves plenty of other public servants in the dust. Most rank-and-file members of Congress pull down $174,000, House Speaker Mike Johnson makes $223,500, and members of President Donald Trump’s cabinet make $246,400 a year.
Notably, billionaire businessman Mike Bloomberg refused his mayoral paycheck altogether, opting to take a $1 salary while running the city from 2002 to 2013.
