Rep Rashida Tlaib faces backlash after controversial chant during Trump’s State of the Union
WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Rashida Tlaib is facing quite a backlash after she was allegedly caught on camera indulging in some controversial commentary.
The progressive Michigan Democrat sparked outrage on Tuesday, February 24, after seemingly chanting the name of a white supremacist group while Republicans roared “USA” during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.
A newly circulated clip shows Tlaib mockingly invoking the far-right hate group’s name toward her controversial ally, Rep Ilhan Omar, as GOP lawmakers stood and applauded Trump.
“Everything you need to know about today’s Democrats,” the National Republican Congressional Committee posted on X, alongside footage of the moment. “They cannot stand this country, they cannot stand its comeback, & they cannot hide their contempt anymore.”
Tlaib attended the speech wearing a “F**k ICE” pin on her lapel and repeatedly heckled Trump throughout his nearly two-hour primetime address. Omar, seated next to Tlaib, joined her in protest as they used their cellphone and occasionally reacted. The pair eventually left early.
Calls to ‘censure’ Rashida Tlaib
Critics on social media demanded consequences, with some calling for expulsion from Congress over what they described as “offensive” and “treasonous” behavior.
"Talib and Ohmar need to be removed from Congress. It's unbelievable the hatred they have for the USA. Why is this being allowed with out consequences?" one posted on X (formerly Twitter).
"How is she not censured?" another asked.
"President Trump was absolutely right when he said these people are crazy," one more wrote.
"She's a disgusting excuse for a congresswoman. She never misses an opportunity to embarrass herself," another chimed in.
"Sick. They are honestly bad people and we need to seriously and deeply and consistently PRAY for them," one more tweet read.

Trump fires back, Council on American-Islamic Relations responds
President Trump blasted Omar and Tlaib on social media.
“When you watch Low IQ Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, as they screamed uncontrollably last night at the very elegant State of the Union, such an important and beautiful event,” the Republican leader posted on Truth Social on Wednesday. “They had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalized."
He continued, “When people can behave like that, and knowing that they are Crooked and Corrupt Politicians, so bad for our Country, we should send them back from where they came — as fast as possible."
Tlaib responded later on X, “Can’t take two Muslimas [Muslim women] talking back and correcting him so now he is crashing out. #PresidentMajnoon.”
Majnoon is reportedly an Arabic word that means possessed by an evil spirit, mad, or fanatical.

Omar also posted on social media, “I said what I said. I had to remind Trump that his administration was responsible for killing two of my constituents."

Trump's remarks also drew condemnation from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
"It's racist and bigoted to say two Muslim U.S. lawmakers should be sent to the country they were born in or where their ancestors came from based on their criticism of the gunning down of Americans by ICE," said CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell.
