NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Comedian Jimmy Fallon took aim at first lady Melania Trump’s 2018 White House Christmas decorations during his Tuesday night monologue on 'The Tonight Show' (November 11).

Fallon’s jokes followed President Donald Trump’s recent defense of demolishing the historic East Wing of the White House, a moment Fallon cleverly tied to Melania’s famously eerie red Christmas trees. Here’s how the late-night host connected Trump’s remarks to his roast of the first lady’s holiday decor.

“Last night, during an interview on Fox News, Trump said the East Wing ‘looked like hell’ before he demolished it,” Fallon quipped at the 3:00 mark of his monologue. “And, if you remember Melania’s Christmas decorations…”

At that moment, the show cut to a photo of the blood-red Christmas trees from 2018, which many viewers found eerie. Fallon added, “He’s right. More like a festive hell. But it was.”

He then shifted to another news item: “Some more political news, I saw that Trump just floated the idea of a 50-year mortgage plan.” For this year, following her return to the White House, first lady Melania Trump is already preparing for the 2025 holiday season.

On October 8, she shared a short video on X showing herself arranging a gold-themed Christmas display, complete with delicate ornaments and leafy garlands. “Christmas meeting in the @WhiteHouse,” her office captioned the post, adding a sparkle emoji. So far, the official theme for this year’s White House Christmas has not been announced.

Melania Trump's 2018 White House Christmas decor explained

White House Christmas decorations drew plenty of attention during Donald Trump’s first term. In her first year, Melania Trump kept the decor fairly traditional, but in 2018, she went bold, placing 40 blood-red conical Christmas trees throughout the White House under the theme “American Treasures.” The White House said the red color honored the stripes on the presidential seal, symbolizing valor and bravery.

Melania’s striking design quickly caught the internet’s attention, inspiring countless memes. Many compared the shaggy red trees to the cloaks from 'The Handmaid’s Tale' or the sea of blood in 'The Shining.'

Melania later defended her choices, saying everyone has different tastes today. “I think they look fantastic. I hope everybody will come over and visit it. In real life, they look even more beautiful,” she said. “You are all welcome to visit the White House, the people’s house.”

Recently, a social source predicted that Melania would spend more time on holiday decorating over the next four years. “This term, without her [late mother Amalija Knavs], she will seek to make her own traditions, and we may all be surprised,” the source said.

“She has Barron with her, and since he is closer to Washington than if she were hiding out in Palm Beach, she may likely spend more time and devote more honest interest in decorating for Christmas in the White House.” The source added, “This doesn’t mean she is gung-ho; it just means she will do what she has to do. And that is nothing new.”
