LANCASTER, CALIFORNIA: In a deeply emotional revelation, Angel Carter, twin sister of the late singer Aaron Carter, opened up about their tense final conversation just 3 days before his tragic death at age 34 in November 2022.

Aaron was found unresponsive in his bathtub, with his death ruled as accidental drowning influenced by the effects of alprazolam and inhaling difluoroethane.

The Carter siblings have faced repeated tragedy, with sister Leslie Carter dying from an overdose at 25 in 2012, and Bobbie Jean Carter dying in 2023 at 41 from a fatal combination of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Angel Carter opens up about the last time she saw her brother Aaron

In this week's issue of PEOPLE, Angel Carter opened up about the last time she saw her brother Aaron in person, and their final conversation before his tragic death.

Reflecting on the emotional moment, Angel shared, “It makes me sad to know that the last time I saw him was in 2019 in a courtroom. It was the last time I ever saw Aaron.”

That courtroom appearance followed a difficult period in the Carter family.

In 2019, Angel and her brother, Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter, revealed on social media that they had filed restraining orders against Aaron due to what they described as “increasingly alarming behavior", including Aaron's disturbing admission of having thoughts about harming Nick’s pregnant wife and unborn child.

“We were left with no choice, but to take every measure possible to protect ourselves and our family,” Nick stated at the time.

Angel Carter details her last phone conversation with Aaron Carter, days before his death

Angel Carter revealed to PEOPLE that she never saw Aaron in person again after that court date. However, they did reconnect over the phone, with their first conversations happening about a year later.

“So after the restraining orders, we had finally spoken maybe a year later, and we had two conversations that were four hours long,” she recalled. “Long, long, long conversations.... And then I had also talked to him a few times in between that.... He had Covid at one point, and I called him to check on him.”

Angel said she was beginning to feel hopeful about repairing their relationship. “I was starting to open the door,” she noted. But tragically, the timing didn’t allow for healing. “I talked to him three days before he passed away.”

Recalling that final call, Angel said Aaron had been live on Instagram, inhaling duster cans and passing out.

Concerned, she immediately called him. “I said, ‘What are you doing?’ and he tried to deny it. I told him, ‘Aaron, I saw you on Live. I saw it happen. Live, you doing this.’”

The conversation quickly turned emotional when Aaron shifted the blame onto her, saying, “Well, you're the reason why I'd use drugs.”

“Aaron, that's not really fair. You can't, don't blame me for this,” Angel responded. Though upset, she still wanted to help him.

“And he just said, 'Well, I want to see you. You haven't seen me in almost three years.' And I said, 'Well, I want to see you too.' But I said, 'It's got to be with a therapist. We've got to have someone mediating the situation.' And he said, 'Well, I'll call my therapist right now.' And I said, 'No, it can't be your therapist. It can't be my therapist. It's got to be a middle person like someone else.”

They ended the call with a plan to speak again later. “And I got off the phone. I was like, 'Well, let's talk later. I'll call you a little later' I was angry, honestly” Angel admitted. “I was angry that he had told me that I was the reason why he was doing drugs and got off the phone. And that was the last time I talked to him.”

In an emotional interview with Gayle King on 'CBS Mornings', Angel Carter opened up about the painful reasons she believes so many of her siblings died young.

When asked about her late siblings, Angel reflected on their upbringing, saying, “There's certainly a generational dysfunction issue here that comes along with it, but as far as growing up, there was a time where we were a really close family. There was a lot of love. But there was a lot of chaos going on at the same time..”

She described a turbulent home environment marked by constant fighting between her parents, lack of stability, and emotional neglect, as per UNILAD.

“Just fighting. My parents were just fighting all the time. Just dysfunction in the home. No boundaries. No stability. No one to talk to. It just felt like, if I had an issue going on, I really couldn't have my parents to lean on to,” she admitted.

Angel also pointed to the pressures of fame as a major factor that intensified the dysfunction within their family.

Angel revealed that the last time she saw her brother Aaron in person was three years before his death - and it happened in a courtroom.
