WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President Kamala Harris has requested that her debate with former president Donald Trump should take place with completely unmuted microphones. However, ABC News rejected her request following days of back-and-forth over what Republicans perceived to be Democratic attempts to set up a trap for the GOP nominee.

The New York Post looked at a network email that lists rules that are similar to those for Trump's CNN debate against President Joe Biden on June 27. These rules include no audience, no pre-written notes or props, and muffled mics when a candidate is not speaking.

There will be no more than a pen, a pad of paper, and a bottle of water for Trump and Harris to use while they are on stage.

Trump campaign insisted the debate to be held at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center

The Republican campaign had demanded that the June debate which would take place in Philadelphia's National Constitution Center adhere to the same set of regulations as the June debate with Biden. On Monday, August 26, Harris' camp asserted that they intended for both candidates to have their microphones on during the whole ninety-minute debate.

According to a prominent Trump ally, ABC sent out the regulations late last week, and they were reiterated on Tuesday, August August 27.

Trump campaign said they understood Harris campaign had backed off the request

The outlet was informed on Wednesday, August 28, by a Trump campaign source that the campaign knew that the Harris campaign had withdrawn the request, but the exact timeline was not clear.

“At this point Team Harris is going to be taking an ‘L’ when they finally accept, as the debate rules aren’t changing, or they’ll take an even bigger ‘L’ if they back out of the debate because the Dana Bash/CNN interview goes poorly,” a top Trump ally added.

“The Harris folks are completely full of it,” Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller told Newsmax on Wednesday. “Everything was agreed to and set last week,” he added. “The Harris people are trying to distract and come up with something shiny to move away from the fact that she’s not doing interviews,” he continued.

Why did Kamala Harris want the mics to be unmuted?

It was commonly believed that Kamala Harris intended for the mics to be unmuted in order to use an interjectory statement and create a viral sensation.

Former prosecutor Harris garnered media attention in 2020 for her forceful "I'm speaking!" rebuke of then-vice president Mike Pence, portraying him as a sexist, after attacking Biden during a 2019 presidential primary debate for being against interracial school busing, which was required by federal law.

“That little girl was me!” Harris emoted in a racially charged attack that prompted a furious future first lady Jill Biden to say the California senator should “go f–k herself.” Later, both of the debate stage comments appeared on campaign merchandising supporting Harris.

Internet says ABC News changing the debate rules is just a smoke screen

Netizens took shots at the news network and Kamala Harris after ABC stated that they were going to change the rules of the debate much to Harris' disappointment. One X user tweeted, "She just wanted to say “I’m speaking” repeatedly because that’s literally all she’s got."

Another added, "Why this retard would want to change this rule is beyond me. I wish ABC accepted her terms. Let the moron bury herself." "This is just a smoke screen to make it look like they are being fair and tough. Meanwhile, they are letting her know what kind of questions will be asked. Don’t fall for it," remarked one.

"She so desperately wants Trump to interrupt her so she can put her index finger up and sternly say “I’m speaking now!” …because that’s all she has," said someone else.
