Elle King disrespects Dolly Parton with 'drunk' performance
Several concertgoers posted footage of King's awful performance on social media, where she could be heard stuttering and forgetting the words to several of Dolly's popular songs.
King was observed slurring her words and using the F-word several times during the performance before acknowledging that she was "hammered" on stage.
According to a TikTok user, King used profanity at least 15 times during her performance. She appeared to be singing Dolly's 'Marry Me', without knowing the lyrics.
"I don't give a s***," she declared while performing. King even cut off someone who was honoring Dolly with a speech. A viewer commented: "At the end they shut the curtain on her, ended the variety show and said goodnight," per The Mirror.
The Grand Ole Opry released an apology statement saying, "We deeply regret and apologize for the language that was used during last night's second Opry performance."
King has not yet officially addressed the event on social media or in a statement.
Elle King earlier performed drunk on New Year's Eve Live: Nashville's Big Bash
King has previously performed while intoxicated at significant events.
On December 31, King performed her song 'Drunk (And I Don't Want To Go Home)', which features Miranda Lambert, on New Year's Eve Live: Nashville's Big Bash.
She sang "Baby, I'm drunk and I don't wanna go home" while walking down the catwalk stage. At the end, she added, "Who does?" per The Sun.
King did not speak on the recent performance, but she has discussed her drinking in the past and insisted that she has self-control.
She said in a 2022 interview: "I really like to drink and sing. I don’t want to get as drunk as I used to. Drinking makes me less nervous about hitting the notes when I sing. If I don’t make them, it won’t sting as much."
Internet blasts Elle King for disrespecting Dolly Parton
Fans raced to social media to voice their disappointment and show concern for King. One such fan conveyed their disappointment over King's performance by saying, "I know nothing about Elle king so I’m gonna start off by saying that."
"However you will not disrespect Dolly Parton and the Ryman by cursing and being so drunk it’s not even funny. While trying to perform. What she did is an absolute disgrace, and she seriously needs help," the fan further added.
The Grand Ole Opry posted that 'American Idol' alum Lauren Aliana would not be able to attend Dolly's birthday tribute. Under the post, another fan expressed their disappointment.
The fan wrote: "I wish she would’ve been there because Elle King ruined the night with her horrible, drunk, and profane performance. Dolly Parton would’ve been mortified. For our first time at The Opry, it was a shame we all had to witness that."
Another fan exclaimed, "I’m disappointed in the @opry for allowing an intoxicated and disrespectful performance by Elle King in failure of honoring the great Dolly Parton. I was hesitant to put this out, but I love country music to my core. Where has Country Music gone? It’s unrecognizable."
