Andrew Garfield sets record straight on 'La La Land' rumors linked to Emma Stone romance
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Andrew Garfield is finally unraveling a long-standing Hollywood mystery about his dating life that has kept fans buzzing.
The actor, who has kept notoriously tight-lipped about his personal life, has spoken out for the first time about rumors that the hit 2016 musical 'La La Land' was inspired by his alleged relationship with Emma Stone.
Andrew Garfield reiterates he won't speak about his personal life ever
The rumors surrounding 'La La Land'—a film about the bittersweet romance between an actress and a musician chasing their dreams—have lingered for years. Many fans speculated that the movie mirrored the apparent love story of Garfield and Stone.
However, in an interview with Esquire published on Wednesday, October 2, Garfield finally set the record straight, albeit in his typical enigmatic fashion.
"I guess people need something to believe," said ' The Social Network' star with a shrug when asked about the rumors, before emphasizing his firm stance on keeping his personal life private. "I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever."
'La La Land' came out a year after Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone's alleged split
Andrew Garfield, 41, and Emma Stone, 35, reportedly started dating in 2011 while filming 'The Amazing Spider-Man' where they played on-screen lovers Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. The pair quickly became one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples.
"They got close during filming and have been hooking up," revealed a source at the time, before adding, "They haven’t gone public, but [Andrew’s] told his friends."
After four years together, the couple apparently decided to part ways in October 2015 and neither commented publicly on the breakup. A year later, Stone and Ryan Gosling portrayed star-crossed lovers pursuing lofty aspirations in Damien Chazelle’s 'La La Land'.
"The movie is not based on anything. There is something very poetic about a city that is built by people with these unrealistic dreams, and they just put it all on the line for that," said the director, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
The former couple has since moved on. Stone married 'SNL' director Dave McCary in 2020 and welcomed a daughter, Louise Jean, in 2021. As per reports, Garfield is dating Kate Thomas, a self-described "professional witch."
Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have an 'unconditional' bond
Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone continue to be close friends.
In a 2016 interview with Vogue, Stone referred to Garfield as someone she "still [loves] very much." He echoed this sentiment the following year, stating, "We care about each other so much, and that’s a given, that’s kind of this unconditional thing."
In a January 2017 Vanity Fair interview, Garfield added, "There’s so much love between us and so much respect. … I’m her biggest fan as an artist," as per US Weekly.
Garfield even revealed in a 2022 podcast that he had to keep his return to the Spider-Man franchise a secret from Stone, joking that she texted him, "You're a jerk!" after finding out.
