However, in an interview with Esquire published on Wednesday, October 2, Garfield finally set the record straight, albeit in his typical enigmatic fashion.

"I guess people need something to believe," said ' The Social Network' star with a shrug when asked about the rumors, before emphasizing his firm stance on keeping his personal life private. "I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever."

'La La Land' came out a year after Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone's alleged split

Andrew Garfield, 41, and Emma Stone, 35, reportedly started dating in 2011 while filming 'The Amazing Spider-Man' where they played on-screen lovers Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. The pair quickly became one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples.

"They got close during filming and have been hooking up," revealed a source at the time, before adding, "They haven’t gone public, but [Andrew’s] told his friends."

After four years together, the couple apparently decided to part ways in October 2015 and neither commented publicly on the breakup. A year later, Stone and Ryan Gosling portrayed star-crossed lovers pursuing lofty aspirations in Damien Chazelle’s 'La La Land'.

"The movie is not based on anything. There is something very poetic about a city that is built by people with these unrealistic dreams, and they just put it all on the line for that," said the director, as per The Hollywood Reporter

The former couple has since moved on. Stone married 'SNL' director Dave McCary in 2020 and welcomed a daughter, Louise Jean, in 2021. As per reports, Garfield is dating Kate Thomas, a self-described "professional witch."
