LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Angelina Jolie, once hailed as one of Hollywood's most beautiful and lucrative stars, has created waves for a different reason at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 29.

Jolie wore a beige gown with an integrated fur shawl and a blonde hairdo, leaving her arms and shoulders bare. Internet users soon began to pay attention to her unusually noticeable veins.

While the 'Salt' actress' appearance with the prominent veins on her forearms alarmed several fans online, a certified Cosmetic Dermatologist explained the potential causes of such noticeable veins on her arms.

After spending the last few years mainly hidden from the public eye, the 49-year-old actress made a rare red carpet-appearance at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 29.

Jolie attended the lavish event for the premiere of 'Maria', a biopic directed by Pablo Larraín. The film features the actress in the role of the renowned opera soprano Maria Callas.

While Jolie's attendance at the festival was undoubtedly well received by the audience (she earned a standing ovation from the excited crowd), pictures showing her prominent veins running down her wrists and arms have sparked health concerns online.

Dr Mariano Busso, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist from Miami and Los Angeles, provided Nicki Swift with advice and discussed the potential causes of the noticeable veins on Jolie's arms.

Busso explained, "As we age, our skin thins from losing collagen as well as fat tissue. When this volume loss occurs in the hands, structures like veins and tendons become more prominent."

The cosmetic dermatologist ruled on three things regarding Jolie. First, naturally thin skin. "Individuals with thin skin have more prominent veins," he noted.

Another possibility is age-related volume decrease, which all people eventually experience. Third, a lot of physical activity may be the reason for Jolie's dilated veins.

"The use of filler can soften this look. In addition, sclerotherapy can reduce the size of those veins," he continued.

Concerns about the actress's appearance, especially the visible veins on her forearms, were voiced by several fans on social media.

One person wrote on Instagram, "How is she only 49. She looks so much older with her arms," while another claimed, "Her hands and arms though. She always looks sad. You can feel it."

"Oh my goodness, she doesn’t look that good, and those veins popping out like that! Is she okay?" another exclaimed.

Another questioned, "Why are her veins so large? Is she okay health wise."

One noted, "Her veins are popping like this because she hasn’t got even 1 once of fat on her body to cover them. This is dangerous"

"Prayers and thoughts to her veins. Hope she is okay," added another.

Angelina Jolie reveals she 'embraces' growing older

Despite the controversy surrounding her arm veins at the Venice International Film Festival, Angelina Jolie is probably unaffected by the public frenzy surrounding her physical appearance.

Jolie said in an interview with Indie Wire that she does not mind growing older. "I'm 49. I do feel like an older woman now and I embrace that," she remarked in response to a question regarding the poignancy of Maria Callas's songs.

Jolie, who has had a stunning makeover, has previously highlighted the advantages of growing older, including a sweet explanation.

Jolie said in an interview with In Style in 2018 (via People), "I look in the mirror and I see that I look like my mother, and that warms me. I also see myself aging, and I love it because it means I'm alive—I'm living and getting older."

The mother-of-six revealed that she periodically gets IPL skin treatments to get rid of black spots that came on during pregnancy, but she also revealed that she only has "one second" to treat herself to more cosmetic procedures because she spends most of her time taking care of her children and her activism.

That being said, much like everyone else, the Hollywood legend struggles with insecurity. "Don't love having a random dark spot from a pregnancy, sure," she said.

Jolie added, "I see my flaws. But what I see that I like isn't about a structure or an appearance. It's more that I see my family in my face. I see my age."
