The 75-year-old fashion icon, who is also the Met Gala chairperson, surprised many by removing her signature sunglasses during a conversation with The Cut, only to offer a meandering explanation when asked how fashion could promote allyship.

Allyship refers to supporting the rights of marginalized or minority groups, regardless of one's own membership in those groups, encompassing issues like race, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, and more.

When asked, "How do you use fashion to create allyship?" Wintour replied, "I think fashion is a language, like music is a language. And its a global language, so I think an event like tonight will have a global resonance."

She added, "We have guests coming from all over the world so whether you're in India, in Asia."

Then she corrected her statement claiming, "Sorry, Japan or Europe or whatever, there will be many people here that you will know and recognize. So I think trying to reach everyone with the important message of this event is so important."
