WASHINGTON, DC: Representative Jim Jordan, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, faced significant outrage online after demanding testimony from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and another senior state prosecutor in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s conviction.

On Friday, May 31, Jordan sent letters to Bragg and Matthew Colangelo, senior counsel to the DA’s office, calling for their testimony before the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government on June 13, as per NBC News.

Jordan’s letter stated, "This hearing will examine actions by state and local prosecutors to engage politically motivated prosecutions of federal officials, particularly the recent political prosecution of President Donald Trump by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office."

Jordan’s demand for their testimony came just a day after Trump was found guilty, marking an effort by Republicans to discredit the prosecution related to hush money payments. Trump and his allies have consistently claimed that Judge Juan Merchan and the prosecutors are part of a Democratic conspiracy to derail his presidential aspirations.

In support of this narrative, Jordan and other Republican lawmakers have taken steps to challenge the case, including filing ethics complaints against Merchan and requesting testimonies from involved prosecutors.

The case has led to a surge in violent threats against those involved. Advance Democracy, a nonprofit organization that monitors right-wing social media, reported an increase in posts calling for violence and doxxing against the jurors, Bragg, and Merchan.

Democrats were quick to reject Jordan’s call for testimony. Representative Dan Goldman, a member of the Subcommittee, posted on X that Congress lacked the jurisdiction to investigate Trump’s prosecution, emphasizing that Trump was no longer a federal official.

Jordan’s efforts to undermine legal actions against Trump extended beyond New York. He also initiated an investigation into Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ coordination with the former House January 6 committee regarding the election interference case against Trump in Georgia.

In March, Jordan subpoenaed documents from Willis’ office after she refused to comply with earlier requests, continuing his aggressive stance against legal challenges faced by Trump.

Jim Jordan's demand for Alvin Bragg and Matthew Colangelo's testimony sparks fury online

The internet's reaction to Jordan's demand for Bragg and Colangelo's testimony was swift and largely critical.

One X user lamented, "Unfortunately just another sham hearing with sound bites and no consequences," while another remarked, "This is useless. What's the outcome here? NOTHING Because Republicans talk a good game and think that's enough. They never, ever FIGHT FOR US."

Another user expressed frustration with Jordan’s perceived ineffectiveness, stating, "Jordan will not do anything. He is weak. He talks tough but never does anything. Except talk of course. He talks and talks, and talks and talks. When he is done talking he talks some more. All he ever does is talk."

A fourth user wrote, "Congress has no ability to arrest or prosecute. They can only refer to the DOJ for prosecution. So this will be just theater, like everything else." Another user commented, "The Republicans will do nothing. Jim Jordan, huge disappointment that he is, will just make a bunch of noise and write strongly worded letters."

Another added, "Useless rhetoric. Jim Jordan has been doing strongly worded hearings for decades. No results. Now it's time he did something useful like impeaching Biden, Mayorkas, and Garland."

One user claimed, "Gym Jordan is as dirty as it gets. All those years in Congress, and all he has done is make noise. He doesn't even know how to conduct an investigation. All the competent attorneys are Democrats. Jordan cannot pass the Bar Exam. He has never proposed any legislation in all those years."

Another user echoed this sentiment, "It's going to be another show, all theatrics, congress, especially the GOP has proven to be nothing but cowards."
