NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Democratic Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said on Tuesday, November 4, that New Yorkers “don’t take well to threats” after President Donald Trump stated he would give only the bare minimum to New York following the 2025 New York City mayoral election.

Zohran Mamdani won the 2025 NYC mayoral race by defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a historic and closely watched contest, according to projections from Decision Desk HQ.

Following Zohran Mamdani’s win, CNN’s Abby Phillip asked Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, “Trump promised… that he will give only the bare minimum to New York as a result of this election, what do you say to that?”

“I think he should be careful about the threats that he issues and what cities he threatens, because New York City, as we see from this electorate, these are not people… who easily back down, who take well to threats,” the Democratic representative replied.

Further taking a jab at the Trump administration, Ocasio-Cortez said, “I think that Americans are appalled by what they are seeing coming out of this administration. They are appalled by the cowardice of Congress, by these Republican majorities. I think that they see Donald Trump now for who he is, which is a handmaiden to billionaires.”

She also said, “We have SNAP recipients that this administration has essentially indicated, and this president has indicated, that he is willing to starve them in order to coerce them into supporting him.”

Mamdani’s win marks a major milestone for the city’s progressive movement, as the self-described democratic socialist became the first person of South Asian descent to hold the office.

AOC hails Zohran Mamdani’s win as new era for Democrats

During an interview with MSNBC on Tuesday, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said, "Americans everywhere are not going to be scared. We will not be intimidated by an administration that is violating rights and making life hard and unaffordable for every single American in this country. And we will send in a wave of Democrats that will not bow to this administration, but stand up to this administration."

She called Mamdani's campaign a "heroic effort" and hailed the 34-year-old’s win as a sign of a new generation sweeping away the status quo in both parties.

Ocasio-Cortez also emphasized, "They were not just tasked with defeating a Republican. They were also tasked with defeating the old guard of the Democratic Party that essentially led us to many of the perils of this moment. So he had a two-front war to win, which is what makes his victory so deeply impressive."

She also said that Mamdani’s approach isn’t a universal model for electoral success, and cited Mikie Sherrill’s win in New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger’s win in Virginia. She urged Democrats to embrace both progressive and moderate voices.
