LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Aubrey Plaza once dropped a bombshell about her late husband Jeff Baena, which shook everyone. It seems the talented filmmaker received actual "death threats in his DMs" after the couple tied the knot in 2020.
The duo had been together since 2011, but they decided to make it official in 2020 — much to the dismay of some of Plaza's die-hard fans. Years later, their love story took a tragic turn when Baena died by suicide at the age of 47 on January 3, 2025.
While Plaza hasn’t addressed his death publicly, her past revelations are now taking on a deeper meaning.
Jeff Baena received death threats after wedding to Aubrey Plaza
In 2022, Aubrey Plaza spilled the tea to Cosmopolitan about how brazen some fans’ reactions were when she got hitched. "Oh my God. Jeff got death threats in his DMs," she said.
The interviewer had pointed out how some of her bisexual fans were heartbroken over her marriage. "People project so much stuff onto marriage, but it wasn’t some big statement I’m trying to make where I want everybody to react to it," she responded.
The story of their wedding is just as quirky as you’d expect from someone like Plaza. In December 2021 during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she recounted how their low-key and totally spontaneous nuptials went down in the middle of the COVID-19 lockdown.
"A lot of things happened during COVID for me. Yes, we got married. Big deal," she quipped. "We got a little bored one night. We got married, and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s real, look it up."
And what did the couple wear for their big day? Matching tie-dye pajamas, of course. But these weren’t just any pajamas—Baena had made them himself. "We were in the lockdown," she shared. "Things got a little crazy, especially in my house. My husband got really into tie-dying and when I say tie-dying, I mean 50 shirts a day."
The ceremony itself was equally unconventional. Plaza described how she threw together a “love altar” in their yard, complete with stones, smoke, fire, etc.
"I created a very quick love altar in our yard," she recalled. "Facts of our love, little stones, smoke, fire. Things of that nature. Then the man from Alhambra showed up in a Hawaiian shirt with a briefcase. I can't remember a lot of it. It was fuzzy, but I'm pretty sure it's legal."
Jeff Baena's tragic death left fans in shock
On a somber note, Jeff Baena’s untimely death has left many in shock.
According to Daily Mail, he died by suicide and was found by an assistant in the Los Feliz home he shared with his wife on Friday morning.
Authorities arrived at the scene at 10:25 am, and his family later released a statement asking for privacy during this difficult time.
Plaza hasn’t spoken publicly about his death yet, but her last Instagram post featuring him offers a glimpse of her deep admiration for him.
In the May 2021 post, she gushed, "So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for dreaming up another film that takes us to Italia to cause some more trouble."
It included a heartwarming photo of the two gazing lovingly at each other and screenshots of a Deadline article about their film titled 'Spin Me Round'.

Their life together was filled with adventures. They were last spotted on a hike in Griffith Park in July 2024, enjoying each other’s company as they often did.
Baena leaves behind not only Plaza but also a family who adored him, including his mother Barbra Stern, stepfather Roger Stern, brother Brad Baena, and step-siblings Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.
