LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actress and comedian Ayo Edebiri revealed she received a wave of death threats and racist messages after Elon Musk amplified a fake news report claiming she was replacing Johnny Depp in a 'Pirates of the Caribbean' reboot, People reported

Musk, who has frequently criticized Disney, shared the false claim on X (formerly Twitter) in February 2024, posting “Disney sucks” alongside a now-deleted tweet.

Ayo Edebiri, 29, addressed the situation on Instagram this week, calling Musk an “idiot” and reflecting on the intense harassment she endured over a movie she had no involvement with.

“Just remembering when I got some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life… for a fake reboot of a movie I had never even heard of because of this man LMAO,” she wrote.

"LMAO so not only is he a double s**g h**l-ing fascist, he's an idiot. but anyway," she added while slamming Musk, who is now leading President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Johnny Depp, 61, plays Jack Sparrow in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie series. While franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has referred to the upcoming installment as a "reboot," he has also acknowledged that he would love to see Depp return to the iconic role.

In December 2024, Variety revealed that Bruckheimer is working on two separate versions of a sixth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film to keep the door open for Depp’s possible return, according to unnamed sources.

At one point, Margot Robbie was in talks to headline a 'Pirates' project.

Ayo Edebiri facing extreme online harassment, including death threats, over a fake rumor sparked widespread outrage. Fans and supporters of the actress took to Facebook to call out the toxicity fueling the situation.

Many users expressed frustration with the state of online discourse, with one writing, “Elon is a major threat to our country, but so are people who believe these absurdities!”

Another added, “Shows you what an idiot he is! He might be money smart, but that is all he has going for him!”

One person commented, “Proof that all the money in the world can't buy you class.”

One individual stated, “Racist MAGA people. That’s all it is. Has nothing to do with Johnny Depp.”

Another bluntly remarked, “Elon is so full of himself.”
