Backstage hug between 13-year-old DJ Daniel and Erika Kirk steals hearts at 2025 Patriot Awards
LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: A photo went viral of two 2025 Patriot Award winners, 13-year-old DJ Daniel and widow Erika Kirk, sharing a quiet hug backstage. The embrace between the young boy battling terminal cancer and the widow of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk became the night’s most poignant moment.
DJ Daniel inspires with humor and courage
DJ Daniel isn’t your average 13-year-old. He has spent years traveling the country being sworn into law enforcement agencies—more than 1,350 times so far. His mission began after three Houston police officers helped his family during Hurricane Harvey.
“They helped us, so I want to start helping more people,” Daniel said during his Patriot Awards introduction.
His humor had the crowd laughing when he quipped, “I might look 13, but I’m really a 50-year-old stuck in a 13-year-old’s body,” before playfully “arresting” Sean Hannity onstage.
It’s worth noting that Daniel has endured 11 brain surgeries. “On my 11th brain surgery, I woke up on a cloud that day,” Daniel recalled. “God told me I was one of his angels and I’m doing God’s work. He said, ‘I’m going to give you your wings, but I’m going to take these back because you don’t get these until you graduate the school of life.’”
Just months ago, President Donald Trump made him an honorary Secret Service agent after hearing about his dream to serve the country.
On Thursday night, the same Houston officers who inspired Daniel years ago surprised him onstage. His father said their compassion during Hurricane Harvey “literally saved my son’s life.”

Erika Kirk honors late husband Charlie Kirk
Erika Kirk was welcomed with fireworks as she stepped onto the stage in a sparkling green sequin gown. Before taking the mic, she embraced Jason and Brittany Aldean and Jesse Watters.
Jason Aldean reminded everyone that Erika has made it her “mission to keep [Charlie’s] legacy alive,” while Brittany Aldean called her “the woman who refuses to surrender.” Watters added, “Charlie Kirk was an American original.”

“Thank you to the Fox News family and everyone that loved my husband so well,” Erika said. She made clear she wasn’t just accepting the award for herself but also for “our incredible Turning Point USA staff… our 4,200 chapters… the 800,000 student leaders… and the 8,000 churches that are a part of TCU.”
She quoted one of Charlie’s favorite lines: “You’re missing the point. It’s not how I’m saying it that’s upsetting people: it’s the fact that I’m saying the truth." Erika spoke of Charlie’s refusal to back down and her promise to carry his torch forward. “Evil wins when good people stay silent,” she declared. “For the rest of my life, I will make sure that I don’t stay silent… no matter the cost.”
