LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Backstreet Boys singer and 'Building the Band' host AJ McLean recently reflected on his bond with late One Direction star Liam Payne and shared how Netflix’s upcoming music competition will honor him.
Payne, who was set to be a judge on the show alongside McLean, tragically died before its release.
AJ McLean plans to dedicate show to Liam Payne and his family
AJ McLean spoke about their time together and the show’s tribute plans. "We’re dedicating the show to him and his family," said McLean, 47, at the iHeart Radio Music Awards red carpet on March 17, as reported by Parade.

"And it’s a great way for fans to remember him as he truly was — just witty and fun and so outspoken and so supportive of the talent on this show," he added.
McLean said, "It’s just very sad. It really is, but I know he’s safe where he is now and he’s no longer in pain. Hopefully, we can make him proud."
AJ McLean recalls his friendship with Liam Payne
Before his death in October 2024, Liam Payne had already filmed part of 'Building the Band' alongside fellow judges Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland.
The competition, as described by Netflix’s Tudum, groups contestants based on "musical compatibility, connection, and, most importantly, merit" as they attempt to create unforgettable performances.
"Liam and I got very close. He was just a dream to work with. He was a light, so talented, so funny, so genuine, but I get it," McLean, who has been open about his struggles with addiction said.
"I still have the last text conversation we had. I refused to delete it," he continued.

AJ McLean on Liam Payne’s struggles
AJ McLean shared that he did not notice any distress in Liam Payne during their time working together.
"There [were] no signs of anything, again, you know, we as addicts can hide it pretty well, but everything seemed to be fine, but again, you don’t know," he said. "You don’t live with that person’s mind 24/7. You don’t know."

Payne's tragic death temporarily halted production of 'Building the Band' even though Liam had filmed a substantial amount of material for the show.
The decision to continue the show was to "honor his legacy and amazing story as a 'One Direction' member and bring this series to audiences," an insider recently told InTouch Weekly
The insider said, "Netflix is not going to hide Liam’s contribution to this project."
