WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Barack Obama faced public backlash after issuing a statement following the death of former FBI Director Robert Mueller, a figure closely associated with the investigation into President Donald Trump.

Mueller died on Friday, March 20, at the age of 81, following a years-long battle with Parkinson’s disease. The controversy highlights the ongoing divisions surrounding Mueller’s legacy and his investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

Reaction and criticism over Barack Obama’s tribute to Robert Mueller

Following Obama’s post, it quickly triggered significant backlash across social media and within political circles. One user said, "He became a political hack and a tool of insurrection by you and democrats as you ran a complete hoax against president Trump. You and democrats should be ashamed of that behavior, and should be investigated and prosecuted for crimes."

Another commentator added, "Mueller investigation took three years and found nothing. Rule of law selective when applied."

Amid the backlash, one user commented, “What you and Mueller did to Trump is truly brutal.”

Another critic said, "Whatever, Seditious Liar. Everyone knows you used him to unlawfully go after President Trump and wasted over $30M in tax payer money to do so."

One social media user commented, "Are you referring to the ones who fabricated the Russia collusion hoax and helped you rig the vote?"

Another reaction read, “Bob Mueller was one of the most corrupt individuals who ever worked for the FBI!”

Barack Obama reflects on Robert Mueller’s legacy in official statement

Obama took to social media to praise Mueller after his death. He described Mueller as “one of the finest directors in the history of the FBI,” crediting him with transforming the bureau after the 9/11 attacks and helping to save lives.

Obama further emphasized Mueller’s “relentless commitment to the rule of law” and his “unwavering belief in our bedrock values,” calling him one of the most respected public servants of the era.

Mueller had been widely known for serving as special counsel in the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, an inquiry that placed him at the center of political controversy, particularly among Trump supporters.

His investigation determined that Russia had interfered in the election to benefit Trump and that the Trump campaign had welcomed this assistance. However, Mueller and his team found insufficient evidence of a criminal conspiracy and did not reach a prosecutorial conclusion regarding whether he had obstructed justice.

Mueller filed criminal charges against six of the president’s associates, including his campaign chairman and his first national security adviser.
