WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Chuck Schumer criticized President Donald Trump over his remarks following the death of Robert Mueller, who led the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US election. Mueller passed away on Friday, March 20, according to a statement from his family.

A former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2001 to 2013, he took office just days before the September 11 attacks and played a central role in transforming the agency into a modern counterterrorism force.

Chuck Schumer responds to Trump’s remarks on Robert Mueller

Schumer strongly condemned Trump’s reaction after the president posted on Truth Social, “Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

In response, Schumer wrote, “The cruelty is the point. Trump’s goal is to distract you from rising gas prices, his aimless war, ICE abuses, and the Epstein files. Don’t give him what he wants. And may Robert Mueller, a US Marine and lifelong public servant, rest in peace.”

Schumer has frequently clashed with Trump over policy matters. Reacting to the SAVE Act, he stated, “The cost-of-living sky high, people struggling to make ends meet, gas prices out of control, Republicans are STILL choosing to spend their time on the SAVE Act to make it harder for American citizens to vote."

He has also criticized the Iran war launched by the US on February 28. In another post, Schumer said, “Last night we gave Republicans another chance to limit Trump’s unauthorized war in Iran. Once again, Republicans opposed our war powers resolution."

He questioned, “Where is their courage? Where is their loyalty to the Constitution? Where are the public hearings with Secretary Rubio and Hegseth under oath? This issue isn’t going away. Republicans can try to wash their hands of Donald Trump’s war with Iran, but they will not escape responsibility.”

Meanwhile, Trump indicated he is considering “winding down” military operations in Iran, even as his administration deployed 2,500 additional Marines and sought further congressional funding.

Robert Mueller’s legacy and political reactions to Trump’s comments

The cause of Mueller’s death was not immediately known, though he had suffered from Parkinson’s disease for years. His two-year investigation concluded in 2019 over Russian interference in the 2016 election.\

Appointed special counsel in 2017 after Trump dismissed FBI Director James Comey, Mueller oversaw a probe that resulted in 37 indictments and seven guilty pleas, though it found no evidence that Trump or his aides coordinated with Russia. The report did not conclude that Trump committed a crime.

The investigation remained a persistent point of contention, with Trump repeatedly labeling it a “witch hunt,” “a scam,” and a “hoax.” During his 2019 congressional testimony, Mueller stated that Russian interference in the election was “sweeping and systematic.”

Trump’s remarks on Mueller’s death drew immediate criticism from Sen. Adam Schiff, who said, “Every day, this president shows his basic indecency and unfitness for office.” In March 2025, Trump also signed an executive order severing federal ties with WilmerHale, Mueller’s former employer, though the order was later struck down as unconstitutional.

Mueller devoted much of his life to public service, including serving in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. After graduating from Princeton University, he volunteered for service and was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded while leading a platoon to rescue American soldiers under attack.
