WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Barack Obama marked Independence Day with a pointed message that appeared to take yet another swipe at Donald Trump.

While never mentioning his Republican successor by name, Obama warned that American democracy is “under attack” and suggested the country is in serious trouble under its current leadership.

His sharp remarks signal a shift from the usually restrained tone he has maintained during Trump’s presidency, as he grows increasingly vocal about the direction of US policy and governance.

Barack Obama's subtle dig at Donald Trump in a Fourth of July message

Barack Obama appeared to take another swipe at Donald Trump, his third in a week, in a pointed Fourth of July message to the nation.

On Thursday, the former president used the holiday to suggest that American democracy is under threat. “Independence Day is a reminder that America is not the project of any one person,” Obama wrote on social media. “The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word ‘We.’ ‘We The People.’ ‘We Shall Overcome.’ ‘Yes We Can.’ America is owned by no one. It belongs to all citizens”

He went on to imply that the country, under its current leadership, is facing serious challenges.

“And at this moment in history—when core democratic principles seem to be continuously under attack, when too many people around the world have become cynical and disengaged—now is precisely the time to ask ourselves tough questions about how we can build our democracies and make them work in meaningful and practical ways for ordinary people,” Obama added.

Over the past week, Obama has repeatedly taken indirect shots at Trump. He openly criticized a Republican-backed bill aimed at undermining the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and cutting Medicaid funding, warning that the legislation could strip healthcare from more than 16 million Americans.

Internet slams Barack Obama over his subtle jab at Trump

After seeing Barack Obama’s Fourth of July message on X, which appeared to subtly take a dig at Donald Trump, several internet users slammed the former president, accusing him of being jealous of Trump.

One user wrote, "It just goes to show you the level of his mental state. No more vegetable Biden to control. The US has taken a new direction which does not include his philosophy or snippy petty comments."

Another person slammed, "Obama is just jealous. Jealous of the amazing commander in chief, we actually have. Something he could never achieve himself. And tries to constantly make a presence wherever he can so he can feel important. Because no one really cares what he has to say. He and joe biden almost destroyed our country. They're the ones that created the big divide. Absolutely, shameful that he was ever a president."

A commenter shared, "Isn't Barry the guy who told us that America would 'need a magic wand' to bring factory jobs back?? No Obama, all America ever needed was Donald Trump, you boring, self pretentious, dimwit!!"

"Trump is a true patriot that did more to protect America in one week than Barack Obama did in his whole term as president," a Trump supporter reminded.

Another speaker deemed, "Must be so so bitter to see his insane policies failing. Obama was the worst political disaster to hit usa in the last 100 years. Would not be surprised if he was an asset."

Even on X, users didn’t hesitate to criticize Obama, one posted a GIF bluntly telling him to “Go Away.”

Another X user wrote, "That's a whole lot of words that mean absolutely nothing. You're very good at that!"

An annoyed commenter quipped, "We're in a much better place than when you were in office. America is healing."

“We see right through you,” one person remarked

The last commenter said, "All fluff, no substance."
