WASHINGTON, DC: Following Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ impressive fundraising achievements, commentator Ben Shapiro has voiced skepticism about Donald Trump's choice of JD Vance as a potential running mate.

On a recent episode of his eponymous show, Shapiro remarked, “I doubt it,” when asked if Trump would select Vance again.

The conservative commentator speculated that Trump might have chosen a candidate like Glenn Youngkin from Virginia to broaden his appeal.

Ben Shapiro questions Trump’s running mate choice and highlights vulnerabilities

Ben Shapiro explained, “I think he probably would have picked somebody like Glenn Youngkin from Virginia in an attempt to broaden out his base.”

He noted that Trump opted for Vance because he believed Vance had a strong edge in the race against Joe Biden at the time, referring to Biden’s underwhelming debate performance shortly before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

This debate performance reportedly influenced Biden's decision to withdraw from the race and gave Trump confidence in selecting a less traditional running mate.

However, Shapiro recognized that Trump cannot retroactively change his decision or choose a different candidate to counter Harris effectively.

As Shapiro put it, “He does not have a ‘time machine’” to rectify his choice. Vance, like Trump’s other political associates, has a relatively short national political track record that leaves him vulnerable to scrutiny, particularly from Democrats eager to highlight his more controversial statements.

Shapiro also criticized Vance for his derogatory remarks about Harris, wherein he labeled her as one of the “childless cat ladies” leading the country.

He predicted that Democrats would use these comments to exploit the “gender gap” among voters.

Despite the backlash, Vance defended his comments during an appearance on 'The Megyn Kelly Show', insisting that his remarks were made “sarcastically.” He added, “I’ve got nothing against cats.”

Reactions to Ben Shapiro’s critique of JD Vance as Trump's running mate

Reactions to Ben Shapiro’s comments on Donald Trump’s running mate choice have been varied and often pointed.

One user commented, "He is right though. That being said, the vice presidents are often disliked by the general public. That can take heat of the president. For example Kamala was the border czar, Dick Cheney was worse warmonger than Bush, and so on."

One user replied, "Vance is to personality as Shapiro is to wetness."

One user commented, "Sorry Ben. Now you're stuck with that broken car."

Another stated, "When even old Benny has to admit things aren't going great..."

One user said, "Ben is an idiot!"
