Internet divided as Kevin McCarthy urges Donald Trump to consider Glenn Youngkin as his VP pick
WASHINGTON, DC: Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif) has put forward a new suggestion for former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick: Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin.
McCarthy sidestepped the rumored frontrunners, urging Trump to consider Youngkin as the best choice to secure victory in the upcoming election.
Kevin McCarthy says Glenn Youngkin is best to 'play the game'
With the Republican National Convention approaching from July 15-18, speculation has been rife about Trump’s potential running mate.
McCarthy’s suggestion comes as the search has narrowed in on GOP Senator JD Vance (Ohio) and Marco Rubio (Fla), and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum (R) while Trump has also recently floated Senator Tim Scott (R-S C) as a possible candidate.
McCarthy made his case for Youngkin during a panel interview on 'Real Time with Bill Maher,' highlighting Youngkin’s potential to swing key states in Trump’s favor. “Rubio would be excellent. Tim Scott would be excellent,” McCarthy said, according to The Hill.
If you really want to play the game, if you want to win the election, pick Youngkin in Virginia. Put Youngkin in play, and the race is over," he added.
Kevin McCarthy reasons Glenn Youngkin best VP pick to win Virginia
Maher questioned McCarthy’s reasoning, asking how choosing Youngkin over the other rumored picks could help Trump win against President Biden in November.
McCarthy responded by breaking down the electoral map. “If you look at polling right now you would say Trump has Arizona, Trump has Nevada, Trump has Georgia, so that gets him to 267,” he said.
“He has to win either Michigan, Wisconsin or Pennsylvania. He has to win one of those three," he added.
McCarthy also pointed out Youngkin’s popularity in Virginia, a state that has not voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 2004 but boasts 13 electoral votes.
Youngkin’s recent appearance at Trump’s rally in Virginia further fueled speculation about his potential role in the campaign, noted the publication.
Internet divided over Kevin McCarthy's suggestion of Glenn Youngkin as Donald Trump's VP pick
The suggestion of Youngkin as Trump’s vice presidential pick has sparked mixed reactions online. Some users on X, formerly Twitter, supported McCarthy’s recommendation.
"Agree with McCarty as Youngkin will secure the rust belt states for Trump," wrote one.
Another added, "Great idea. People love Youngkin, who is brilliant and ethical. Worked his way up from humble family beginnings."
However, others were not convinced of Youngkin’s appeal. "He is NOT popular nor has he been effective. Thank god. His policies are dismal uncaring and take us backwards," argued one user.
Another commented, "Youngkin is despised in Virginia. He is not popular," and went on to criticize McCarthy's judgment, "Kevin knows a lot about winning…"
"The only reason he is even partially liked in Virginia is because all of his nasty plans were sunk by his blue senate. He’s ineffectual as a governor at best," wrote one.
