NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher slammed Democrats on his latest episode of 'Real Time' for rallying behind the New York Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) as a potential frontrunner for the 2028 presidential election.

The 69-year-old host clarified that neither AOC, 35, nor longtime progressive Senator Bernie Sanders, 83, should lead the Democratic ticket, questioning their broad appeal and electability.

Maher, who was joined by Senator Tina Smith and journalist Matt Welch, also took aim at recent Democratic tactics, offering a sharp critique of what he sees as performative politics rather than effective leadership.

The 'Real Time' host firmly argued that AOC and Senator Sanders should not be considered leading candidates for the 2028 presidential election.

He began, "What do you think of the fact that the people who are getting the big crowds right now are AOC and Bernie Sanders? They're going around the country. Thank you, there's that same guy.... I call him the 'always wrong guy.'"

Maher continued, "I feel like big crowds — again, these shiny objects that the Democrats chase — it's not about the big crowds when you're talking at a festival or wherever they are."

He even quipped about Sanders making an appearance at Coachella, sarcastically noting that it must have been "fun for the fans."

When fellow guest Senator Tina Smith was asked if AOC should be the party's nominee, she initially replied with a flat "no," before quickly backtracking, saying it wasn’t her place to decide.

“It’s not my job to pick who the candidate is,” she said, raising her hands. Maher then jumped in jokingly, “Oh, it’s mine. It shouldn’t be her, it shouldn't be her.”

Journalist Matt Welch joined the critique, sarcastically asking if the Democrats could offer anything besides symbolic gestures, like “wearing a diaper on the Senate floor,” a jab at Senator Cory Booker’s record-breaking 25-hour filibuster.

Maher slammed the move as political theater, saying it’s “not what’s going to get the job done,” before bluntly dismissing the spectacle as “just whacking each other off.”

Smith defended Booker’s speech, noting it garnered 400 million views globally and helped energize supporters, as per the Daily Mail.

However, critics, particularly from the MAGA camp, brushed off the marathon speech as a time-wasting stunt that did little to hinder the Republican agenda in the Senate.

While Maher voiced strong opposition to the idea, renowned pollster Nate Silver offered a contrasting view, suggesting that AOC could become the Democratic nominee for the 2028 presidential election.

Silver made the bold prediction during a conversation with journalist Galen Druke, who first mentioned AOC as a potential frontrunner.

Surprised, Silver responded, “That was going to be my f***ing pick! We’re both on the AOC bus.”

He backed his claim with polling data, pointing to AOC’s unique position within the progressive lane, as well as her youth, strong media presence, and ability to connect with a wide range of voters.
