Body language expert reveals how Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet appeared 'out of sync' at Coachella

INDIO, CALIFORNIA: Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet showed up at Coachella ready to turn heads. The duo was spotted getting handsy in the crowd on Saturday, April 12, putting on a very public display of affection — but not everyone’s convinced it was as romantic as it looked.

According to body language expert Judi James, who broke it all down for the Daily Mail, the couple’s festival flirt-fest may not be telling the full story.

The PDA parade comes hot on the heels of that now-viral moment at the BNP Paribas Open, where Jenner and Chalamet had a rather awkward exchange that left fans wondering if things were going south. So naturally, their Coachella appearance looked like a carefully timed rebuttal to the split rumors.

They held hands, got cuddly, and stayed close as they wandered through the crowd in Indio, California. But even with all that, their chemistry seemed a bit awkward.

Judi James said the Coachella moment was a deja vu from the couple’s tennis date disaster. "Kylie and Timothee's passion and affection rituals here are similar in theme, essence and composition to the demanded kiss that Kylie performed at the BNP Open," she noted, referencing the moment Kylie Jenner physically turned his head to kiss her mid-match.

"Kylie looks like a focused and insistent lover who knows what she wants and expects and how it should look when it comes to PDAs," she explained. "While Timothee looks easygoing and compliant in terms of not instigating but often being the first to break away."

At Coachella, they were seen in "sensual poses" suggesting affection and closeness — but when you break down the footage, it tells a different story. "It looks like Kylie is doing all the heavy lifting while Timothee appears out of synch and politely less inclined to act seductive or seduced," James noted.

One clip showed Jenner dancing her heart out in the crowd, tossing her hair and vibing to the music. Meanwhile, the 'Dune' star stood behind her, not quite matching the mood.

"Kylie is standing in the audience in front of Timothee and it's clear she's catching the mood of that audience and perhaps doubling it, leaping and jiggling while tossing her hair in some flirtatious-looking dance moves," the expert observed. But behind her? Chalamet looked "more like an awkward dad at a kid’s party."

"His smile looks polite, and his body is placed at a polite social distance from Kylie when he might have been closing in to share the wild dance moves," she added. "His reaction ritual to the music is some nodding to the beat, and he has his hand placed on the rail rather than on Kylie’s body."

Timothee Chalamet's body language rituals suggest a more reserved and possibly private personality

In another clip, Timothee was seen wrapping his arms around Kylie Jenner’s waist while standing behind her. 

"[Kylie] is again standing in front of Timothee, and this time, their torsos are close in a more intimate pose. It's Kylie who leans her head back for a kiss here, and it's Timothee who obliges, but it's also Timothee who breaks first rather than nuzzling in," James explained.

Things got a bit weird when Chalamet decided to play Jenner's pelvis like a bongo. 

“When Kylie dances, she is clapping, but he rather oddly begins to use her pelvis as a bongo," James pointed out. "It’s Timothee who instigates the next kiss, but he does so as the start of a ritual of disengagement."

"He slides his hands back off her hips, but again, her more demanding side emerges as she clutches his hands and pulls them back into position. He ends with two light 'bongo' pats on her bum, but again it is a ritual of disengagement as he parts to step around beside her," the body language expert added.

The bottom line is that Chalamet might not be as into the public swooning as Jenner is. "Timothee doesn’t seem to match Kylie’s love of the passionate PDA," James deduced. "His body language rituals suggest a more reserved and possibly private personality at a point in the relationship where they might be more finely tuned and synchronized."

"We would normally be seeing more ‘opportunistic’ touches and rituals from a partner who is being flirted with and kissed," she added, "where he might ramp up the touches or body proximity rather than closing it down or looking overly polite."
