WASHINGTON, DC: Senator JD Vance ignited a firestorm on Sunday, July 7, by declaring that it would be "totally reasonable" for former President Donald Trump to investigate President Joe Biden if Trump is re-elected this November.

Vance made these comments during an appearance on NBC News's 'Meet the Press' where he downplayed Trump's past threats to appoint a special prosecutor to target Biden, as reported by The Hill.

In the interview, Vance was shown a clip from the previous year in which Trump pledged to "appoint a real special prosecutor to go after the most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and the entire Biden crime family."

Vance, a potential candidate for Trump’s running mate, dismissed the media's reaction to Trump's statement.

"Donald Trump is talking about appointing a special prosecutor to investigate Joe Biden for wrongdoing. What Donald Trump is simply saying is we ought to investigate the prior administration," Vance remarked.

Vance accused Biden of similar actions, suggesting that the Biden administration has spent the past few years targeting Trump. "I think Donald Trump saying, 'Look, let’s do the basic work of investigating wrongdoing' is a reasonable thing for him to do," Vance added.

He further criticized the Biden administration, claiming, "The Biden administration has done far worse. So, if you think that what Donald Trump is proposing is a threat to democracy, isn’t what Biden has already done a massive threat to our system of law and government?"

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Jack Smith to investigate Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Smith's investigation led to two indictments against Trump, one related to the election and another concerning Trump's retention of classified documents and obstruction of government efforts to retrieve them.

Despite these actions, no evidence has emerged to suggest that President Biden or Democratic officials are directing the Department of Justice’s investigations.

The Justice Department has also recently indicted Democrats, including Senator Bob Menendez and Representative Henry Cuellar. Additionally, a Department of Justice special counsel secured a conviction against Hunter Biden, the president’s son.

Vance's remarks are not the first instance of Republicans hinting at retaliatory investigations should Trump return to office. Just days earlier, Senator Lindsey Graham issued a warning of potential retribution against Democrats amidst Trump's ongoing legal battles.
