Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks resigns, the latest Trump immigration leader to go
WASHINGTON, DC: US Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks is stepping down, marking the latest high-level departure from President Donald Trump’s immigration leadership team.
Banks, a former Texas border official who took over the agency in early 2025, reportedly informed staff that he would retire and return home to Texas, ending a tenure that placed him at the center of one of the administration’s most aggressive border enforcement periods.

Mike Banks steps down
Before taking the job, Banks had served as border czar for Texas Governor Greg Abbott, building a reputation as a hardline immigration enforcer aligned closely with Trump-era border policy.
In an internal farewell message, Banks praised the agents under his command and framed his departure as a personal decision tied to family and life back in Texas.
“It is time for me to retire and return home to Texas to focus on my family and ranch,” he wrote, while crediting agents with what he described as a dramatic turnaround in border conditions.
He spoke to Fox News and said, “I feel like I got the ship back on course. From the least secure disastrous chaotic border to the most secure border this country has ever seen. Time to pass the reins, 37 years, it's time to enjoy the family and life."
Under Banks, Border Patrol expanded its mission beyond the southern border, with agents participating in interior immigration operations in major American cities.
His leadership also coincided with a sharp escalation in deportation operations and increased coordination with other federal enforcement agencies.
Rodney Scott, who oversees Border Patrol through US Customs and Border Protection, publicly thanked Banks for returning to federal service during what he described as a challenging period for border security, praising his leadership and decades of service.

Banks was appointed shortly after Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, with a promise to restore what Republicans described as operational control at the border after record migration under former President Joe Biden.
A string of departures raises questions
Banks’ retirement comes during a period of instability at the Department of Homeland Security, where multiple senior immigration officials have either resigned, retired, or been pushed out in recent months.
Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was removed earlier this year and replaced by Markwayne Mullin after a series of controversies involving immigration enforcement operations and public messaging.
Around the same time, Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino retired after backlash tied to aggressive enforcement actions in cities including Minneapolis and Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Todd Lyons, who currently leads US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is also expected to leave his post later this month.
Banks' departure now adds another layer of uncertainty to an administration still aggressively shaping its immigration agenda while simultaneously facing turnover among some of the very officials chosen to carry it out.
