EVANSTON, ILLINOIS: A tense confrontation unfolded on Wednesday, December 17, in the Chicago suburb of Evanston after federal immigration agents conducted enforcement operations that resulted in multiple arrests.

Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino publicly clashed with Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss following the detention of at least ten individuals suspected of being in the United States illegally.

The exchange occurred in front of reporters and pro-immigrant activists, drawing national attention to ongoing immigration enforcement efforts in the region. The incident came amid broader federal operations across several major US cities.

The confrontation followed the arrest of a man at a gas station in Evanston, a city adjacent to Chicago and home to Northwestern University.

Mayor Daniel Biss, a progressive Democrat and former Illinois gubernatorial candidate now running for Congress, challenged Bovino over the presence and actions of Border Patrol agents in the community.

“The ab**e has not been acceptable. The racism has not been acceptable. The violence has not been acceptable,” said Biss, criticizing the conduct of federal authorities during the enforcement operation.

Bovino responded by defending the agency's actions and asserting that Border Patrol was present to address public safety concerns.

“Yeah, that’s why we’re here. That’s why we’re in your community, to hear what you need us to do when we are dealing with a violent situation or something like this, where there should be no violence committed by those who shouldn’t be here in your community,” Bovino said, according to a video captured by Fox 32 Chicago.

Following the encounter, Biss escalated his criticism in comments to the Chicago Sun-Times, describing Bovino as a "condescending, sarcastic liar" and accusing federal agents of staging arrests for publicity rather than public safety.

“He’s saying for the TV cameras, for right-wing podcasters, for national media, that he’s trying to keep us safe,” Biss said.

“And what he’s really doing is trying to create a spectacle while ter**rizing our neighbors and abducting people,” he added.

Border Patrol defends ongoing enforcement

Bovino, a high-profile Border Patrol commander, has been a visible figure in the Chicago region in recent months.

He was frequently seen in Chicagoland during the early stages of 'Operation Midway Blitz', a federal enforcement initiative, before Border Patrol expanded operations to cities including Charlotte, North Carolina, and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Despite reports that agents had shifted focus elsewhere, Bovino told the Sun-Times that Border Patrol never left the Chicago area. "We never left," he said. "We've had several hundred (Agents) here continually."

Later, Bovino announced additional arrests tied to immigration enforcement at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

In a post on X, he said Border Patrol agents had detained 16 individuals suspected of being in the country illegally who were allegedly working as ride-share drivers.

“If you’re in this country illegally, you don’t get to blend into the ‘gig economy’ and bypass our immigration laws,” Bovino wrote. “We’re the best Uber driver, and we’ll get them home again!”
