Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s daughter Vivienne publishes legal notice to drop dad's last name
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s daughter Vivienne has taken another step toward legally dropping her father’s last name by publishing a newspaper notice of her petition in the Los Angeles Daily Journal.
Vivienne is fulfilling one of California’s requirements for a legal name change, with her next court hearing scheduled for November 2 before a judge. This comes as Pitt continues seeking Jolie’s financial and property records in their ongoing legal battle over the sale of Chateau Miraval.
Vivienne Jolie moves to legally drop Brad Pitt’s surname
According to court documents obtained by Page Six, Vivienne published the notice once a week for four consecutive weeks, running from July 24 through August 14. The notice calls for anyone opposing the proposed name change to submit a written opposition before the final hearing.
A judge can approve the request on November 2 if no one objects. She filed the petition in July, requesting that her name be changed from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie and listed the reason for the request as “personal.”
The name Marcheline is also the name of Jolie’s late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died in 2007 after a battle with ovarian and breast cancer.
Vivienne had previously dropped Pitt from her name in 2024 while working with her mother on the Broadway adaptation of 'The Outsiders.' Her name was listed as Vivienne Jolie in the show’s playbill, following several of her siblings in dropping the surname.
Zahara and Maddox have also taken legal steps to remove Pitt from their last names, publishing newspaper notices in the Los Angeles Daily Journal to fulfill California’s requirement. Zahara has a September 28 court hearing scheduled, while Maddox’s next hearing is currently unknown.
Shiloh was the first of the children to make the change official, removing Pitt from her last name on her 18th birthday after, as Entertainment Tonight reported, she “hired her own lawyer and paid for it herself.”
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s continuing legal dispute over Chateau Miraval
Pitt and Jolie have six children, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and 18-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. All six children have reportedly distanced themselves from Pitt following the couple’s 2016 split.
After years of legal proceedings, the former couple were declared legally single in 2019 and finally settled their divorce in December 2024. Earlier this month, he revealed that he struggled deeply while navigating family issues 10 years after his breakup with Jolie, describing the pain as so oppressive that he could feel “the cold steel of the bullet in my head.”
Meanwhile, Pitt continues seeking Jolie’s financial and property records in their legal battle over Chateau Miraval. His lawyers argued that she mischaracterized her claims concerning the 2021 sale of her stake in the French winery and sought records relating to her film roles, brand sponsorships and other professional services.
Her lawyer called the requests “an overreach” and “a gross one,” describing them as controlling conduct. Jolie’s team has also argued that Pitt’s demand for an NDA was abusive and controlling and that she had put her career on hold to help her family heal from alleged abuse.
Pitt sued Jolie in 2022 over the winery sale, alleging she violated an agreement requiring mutual approval. She countersued, claiming he was waging a “vindictive war” against her, while authorities did not charge him after investigating allegations stemming from a 2016 private-jet flight.
