'Bridgerton' star Luke Newton tells Jimmy Fallon how co-star Jonathan Bailey inspired him to get into acting

He spoke about how Bailey helped him navigate the overwhelming experience of falling in love on-screen in front of 82 million viewers. Bailey's guidance, Newton says, was both practical and humorous, helping Newton manage the pressures of fame.

Fallon asked Newton about the unique guide Bailey had supposedly created and Newton confirmed it saying, "So, we talked about it. We always talked about there being a book passed down through Bridgerton siblings, and it never actually happened. It was all just, like, through voice notes, like, communication. Like, Johnny was there for me the whole time."

Newton praised Bailey for his unwavering support, despite the latter juggling a busy schedule. 

Newton remarked, "Not to mention he's been, like, so busy. You know, he's been doing all these different jobs. He was juggling like 'Fellow Travelers', 'Wicked' -- he was doing everything."

Newton emphasized Bailey's dedication, saying, "But he was there for me the whole time."

How Jonathan Bailey inspired Luke Newton to take up acting

At the beginning of the show, Newton shared an incident involving Bailey. He partly credits Bailey as the reason he got into acting. He told host Jimmy Fallon how when he was 10 years old, he had been a regular at the theatre. 

His aunts, he said, were part of the 'Les Miserables' musical performance, and as a little boy, he would often watch them perform and rehearse their roles.

He recalled being afraid of the war scenes, especially since he often used to find himself at the back of the theatre with his fingers in his ears, trying to drown out the loud banging noises on stage. 

Years later, he realized that the boy playing Gavroche on stage was none other than Bailey. "I was watching it week after week thinking I would love up there," Newton said in hindsight. He added his aunts did inquire if he could play a role but those in charge said he was too tall to play the role, since they would require him to stand with a gun on the barricade. 

Bailey also knows the story now.
