Britney Spears paid $2.12M to resolve conservatorship lawsuit and cover her father Jamie's legal expenses

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: According to new information, Britney Spears and her father, Jamie Spears, 71, have reached an official settlement in their long-running legal battle over her 13-year conservatorship.
Court documents, obtained by People, revealed that the 43-year-old pop icon paid $2.12 million to reimburse her father's legal bills as part of the arrangement.
The expenses were paid after the father and daughter negotiated a settlement in Los Angeles Superior Court in February 2024, ending years of acrimonious court proceedings.

Britney Spears agreed to settle father Jamie's $2.12 million in unpaid legal bills
Britney Spears's 13-year conservatorship, which granted her estranged father Jamie Spears authority over his pop star daughter's personal and financial matters, was terminated by an LA County judge in November 2021.
The specifics of the settlement were not initially revealed in court documents filed by both parties in Los Angeles Superior Court, until now. According to information obtained by People, Britney consented to settle Jamie's $2.12 million in unpaid legal bills.
First, $500,000 was sent to the Saul Ewing firm and deposited into the company's US Bank account (the contract was signed by the business's chief counsel, Hal Morris).
Then, $1.62 million was given to Willkie Farr & Gallagher and deposited into their Citibank account (partner Alex M Weingarten signed the contract).
She had 60 days, to pay both fines in full, failing which she would be subject to additional penalties, including post-judgment interest and court and attorney fees.
No additional compensation was given to Jamie's former lawyer, Vivian L Thoreen, a partner at Holland & Knight.
According to People, Britney paid both legal expenses in full within 60 days, as stipulated in the agreement. All disagreements pertaining to the conservatorship proceedings were settled by the payments, as per the agreement signed by Britney and her father.
The agreement states that "no parties concede any admission of fact, claim, liability or wrongdoing. All parties, through their counsel, mutually participated in the preparation and drafting of the agreement. They waived the rights to an appeal."

"It was a great result for Britney because it also avoided the possibility of ever having her testify in court, which she did not want to do, and avoided a media circus," a source told the outlet.
Jamie's lawyer, Weingarten, told PEOPLE in a statement released on Thursday, February 20, "Jamie is thrilled that the case was settled. He has only ever wanted what is best for Britney, whom he loves very much."
"Jamie’s work as conservator has ultimately been vindicated and the world knows how hard he worked to protect her," he added.
Jamie Spears took charge of daughter Britney's life and finances in 2008
Jamie Spears took charge of his oldest daughter's life and finances following some well-publicized mental health issues in 2008. The temporary arrangement turned into a permanent one by the end of the year.
In the years that followed, Britney was judged healthy enough to work in a "hybrid business model," as the former estate conservator described it in court documents, but not well enough to manage her personal affairs, per Daily Mail.
The estate "logged her every purchase down to a drink from Starbucks," regulated her friends, and restricted her whereabouts. Britney also testified in court that she was forced into taking medicine and using birth control against her choice.
Britney's former lawyer, Mathew S Rosengart, was unavailable for comment after the settlement's specifics were released. However, the 'Toxic' singer recently received a visit from her former lawyer and posted about it on social media.
