AUSTIN, TEXAS: Singer Bruce Springsteen didn’t ignore the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, April 25. During a show in Austin, he addressed the previous night in his opening remarks, and noticeably softened the tone of his earlier criticism of the president.
The incident at the Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, DC, involved a gunman, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, who opened fire near a security checkpoint. A federal agent was struck but was protected by a bulletproof vest. President Trump, Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and others were present at the event and escorted out of the venue.

The singer began by grounding the crowd in gratitude and reflection, setting the tone before diving into his set. “We begin tonight with a prayer for our men and women in service overseas. We pray for their safe return.”
He then acknowledged the alarming events from the night before, referencing the shooting at the Correspondents' Dinner in DC, where a gunman opened fire near a security checkpoint, injuring a federal agent who was protected by a bulletproof vest.
“We also send out a prayer of thanks that no one in the administration or anyone attending was hurt in last night’s incident at the press correspondents’ dinner.” Springsteen then moved to a wider message, asking for unity. He also made it clear there should still be space for people to disagree and speak freely. The message landed strongly with the crowd.
“We can disagree, we can be critical of those in power, and we can peacefully fight for our beliefs, but there is no place,” he continued, “in any way or form for political violence of any kind.” He wrapped up his opening remarks by bringing the focus back to the music and the moment, signaling a return to the spirit of the night. “The Eastern Street Band is here tonight to celebrate.”
WHCD shooting forces cancellation, reschedule in the works
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an event held every year where journalists who cover the president come together for a corporate dinner. It is meant to celebrate the First Amendment and support scholarships for journalism students. The US president, public figures and other senior officials usually attend.
Following the shooting scare this year, President Trump was quickly escorted out of the venue. First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other cabinet members were also present and safely evacuated.
Officials said the suspect, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of California, has been taken into custody. The president described him as heavily armed and said he appeared to be acting alone.
In the aftermath of the April 25 shooting, the dinner was cancelled. President Trump said the event will be rescheduled within 30 days and is expected to return on a bigger scale.
