Camilla recalls heartbreaking twist as King Charles' cancer diagnosis suddenly hit home
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: Queen Camilla has offered a deeply personal glimpse into the moment King Charles' cancer diagnosis suddenly changed the meaning of a conversation she had been having for years.
Recalling a visit to a cancer support center shortly before the diagnosis was made public, Camilla, in an interview published on Tuesday, August 18, admitted that she was carrying a secret she desperately wanted to share.
At one point, she nearly said something but stopped herself, knowing the moment was not yet right.
Queen Camilla has spoken for the first time about the pressure of keeping King Charles III's cancer diagnosis secret in the early stages of treatment.

Queen Camilla opens up on King Charles' diagnosis
Camilla said she was visiting a Maggie’s centre near London’s Royal Free Hospital and speaking with people whose lives had been touched by cancer.
She had spent years having these conversations, listening to patients and families describe what it was like to navigate an illness that can change an entire household.
But this time, she was carrying knowledge of her own. Charles had been diagnosed with cancer, and the news had not yet been made public.
In a new conversation with Dame Laura Lee, chief executive of Maggie’s, Camilla looked back on that period and acknowledged just how difficult it had been to sit with people discussing cancer while knowing what was happening in her own family.
“Nobody could say anything at the time,” she said. The Queen then revealed just how close she came to breaking that silence.

During a visit to a cancer support centre just days before the diagnosis was made public, Camilla said she was…
“I almost said something,” Camilla admitted, before explaining that she ultimately felt it was not the right time.
Camilla said she normally approached such visits by simply talking to people and allowing them to share their experiences.
On this occasion, however, she felt something had changed. “I don’t know, I felt it was much more deep,” she explained.
The diagnosis also altered the way she understood the role played by family members supporting cancer patients.
“Suddenly, your husband is diagnosed,” she said, and she found herself having to help care for him while trying to understand the situation herself.
King Charles' cancer diagnosis
Charles’ diagnosis was publicly announced in February 2024, after doctors discovered cancer following treatment for another health problem.
Buckingham Palace did not disclose the type of cancer, but confirmed that the King had begun regular treatment.
The diagnosis temporarily forced Charles to reduce his public schedule. However, he gradually returned to royal duties, making his first major public appearances again in April 2024.
The King later provided a rare health update in December 2025, revealing that his cancer treatment would be reduced in the new year.
For Camilla, however, the significance of Charles’ diagnosis was not simply about the King's public schedule or medical treatment.
It changed the perspective from which she saw the people she had spent years trying to support.
Camilla’s emotional recollection carries particular weight because her connection to Maggie’s long predates Charles’ illness.
She became president of the cancer support charity in 2008 and has spent years visiting its centres, meeting patients, and speaking about the importance of helping families cope with the wider impact of cancer.
Maggie’s was marking its 30th anniversary when Camilla recorded the latest conversation with Lee at Clarence House.
